UUA General Assembly Worship Service

YouTube ONLY

Sunday, July 3, 2022

Annually Unitarian Universalists from across the country gather at General Assembly for a time of celebration, reflection, and strategy. A highlight of the gathering is the Sunday worship service. For this week we’ll share in this worship, which will include a sermon preached by Rev. Gretchen Haley, the minister in Fort Collins, Colorado, and amazing music and stories from many participants.

You will be able to watch the service on UUCR's YouTube channel by Sunday morning on July 3 (click here).

"Forest Bathing"

The Japanese phrase “Shinrin-Yoku” translates roughly to “forest bathing” or absorbing the forest atmosphere. Many studies show the physical and mental health benefits of this practice. There will be a short discussion of the concept, followed by practicing it in our Memorial Woodland Garden, weather permitting. Some may consider this a spiritual practice to better experience the interconnectedness of all life on Earth, and an expression of our 7th UU principle.

President's Message
Dear UUCR Friends,

This is my last President’s Message, as we welcome Lynn Geisert as our new Board President effective July 1, 2022.

I want to express my thanks to all of you who have offered kind words, encouragement, suggestions, and support during this past year. I have greatly appreciated it all.

It has been an honor to serve as your president this year. Collaborating with Rev. Sue more closely has been a growth experience. A few other special “thank yous” are in order. I want to express my gratitude to fellow board members, Lynn Geisert, Jane Hardy, Tom Tontarski, Terry Goldzier, Jackie Mathwich, John Ramsey, and Catherine Brooks for their active participation and engagement on the board this past year. And big thanks to Darlene, who efficiently accomplished every task I gave her and who reminded me of many things I had forgotten.

It has been a good year. Last summer we were just reopening for summer discussions following almost two years of virtual and YouTube services due to Covid-19. We were able to remain open except for a few weeks in early 2022, and UUCR was able to offer a Sunday service each and every week. Kudos to Rev. Sue, the Tech Gurus, and Worship Committee for their flexibility, adaptability, and perseverance in the face of adversity, both viral and technological. Our committees have been very active in multiple areas. We have ideas and plans for next year. I look forward to moving forward with our new Board
and this wonderful congregation.

I hope that each of you will think about how you can use your special talents to further the mission and programs of UUCR and to enhance your own spiritual journey in the coming year.

In gratitude,

Nancy
Broadening Our Horizons —
The "Preaching Along the Potomac" Services this July
UUCR and UUFE each have services or discussions planned for each Sunday morning at 10 am this summer.

I also wanted to share that a group of the larger congregations in the DC area have created a series of services to be offered this July called "Preaching Along the Potomac." I checked with my colleagues leading these services and they welcome our congregants to attend. For each service the access process (Zoom, YouTube streaming, etc.) varies based on the congregation leading the service. (A recording of each service will likely be available after the fact, but we still need to verify that. Stay tuned!)

Details about the overall program are included on the UU Church of Arlington website.

July 3: All Souls Church Unitarian, DC. “The Speed of Justice” – Rev. Rob Keithan
July 10: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax. “One Nation Under God…” – Rev. David Miller
July 17: River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation, “Be Not Afraid” – Rev. Nancy McDonald Ladd.
July 24: Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington. “But…Is It Fun?!” – Rev. Amanda Poppei
July 31: Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church. “When Grace Strikes” – Rev. Abhi Janamanchi

If you have questions, please check with me.

Congress Moves on Gun Safety
Though there was much unhappy news coming from Washington in the past week, there was a success in Congress with the passage of the first substantial law promoting gun safety in 26 years. The Safer Community Act includes incentives for states to pass so-called red flag laws that allow people to petition courts to remove weapons from those deemed a threat to themselves or others. Such a law already exists in Maryland.

Observers credited mass murders in a Texas school and a Buffalo grocery occurring within 10 days of each other, as energizing record numbers of calls and emails to Senators who finally came to a bi-partisan compromise in passing the legislation. It was signed by President Biden.

The bill expands an existing law that prevents people convicted of domestic abuse from owning a gun to include dating partners rather than just spouses and former spouses. It also expands background checks on people between the ages of 18 and 21 seeking to buy a gun by unlocking sealed records of juvenile offenses. Millions more dollars for mental health services, particularly in schools were added.
