"Happiness vs Meaningfulness"
Matt Mielnick, guest speaker

In-person & Zoom Worship Service
Sunday, May 15, 2022 | 10 am
Most of us have worked hard to craft a fairly unified personal story that allows us to understand our lives as coherent. But at some point, this coherent being must then decide on how to move forward in their story. Once you have this quasi-defined sense of self, complete with personal beliefs and values that guide your narrative, what goals should you steer in the direction of what floats your boat?
Matt Mielnick relocated to the Eastern Shore in October of last year to take on the job of Executive Director of The Mainstay in Rock Hall. He has been a performing arts administrator of various non-profits near his former home in Upstate NY for over 30 years. He is also a licensed occupational therapist, an acoustic guitarist, and the author of two published books (one fiction and one non-fiction).
So we can begin the worship service promptly at 10 am, please sign into Zoom ( click here) by no later than 9:50 am.
If you have an "Announcement," "Joy," or "Concern" that you'd like read at the service, please submit them in advance by emailing the UUCR office ( click here) by 9 pm Saturday.

Sunday, May 22 — In-person & Zoom
"To Pray is Human"
Rev. Bran Lennox will lead us in an exploration of the human urge towards prayer. Whatever the form of the Mystery that rings true for each of us, there are times in our lives when we find ourselves moved to pray. What does this mean about who we are?

The Ware Lecture and other UU "Things"
General Assembly 2022
|
When asked "What is Unitarian Universalism?",
most often I first respond, "Unitarian
Universalism is a religious tradition centered around shared values." Then I see where the conversation goes. Is the person curious about our social justice positions, our beliefs, or our history? Do they already have impressions of Unitarian Universalism? How do they understand religion? What personal story might they want to share?
If the conversation continues, I might note that UUs have long provided a platform for progressive voices. And I just might (proudly) toss in, "For example at our annual conference, our speaker in 2021 was Stacey Abrams. Other years we've heard from Mary Oliver, Martin Luther King, and many others."
These speakers each delivered the Ware Lecture, a central event at the Unitarian Universalist Association's annual General Assembly (GA). To learn more about the Ware Lecture, check out this link. Background on Ware Lecture
This year GA will be held from June 22 – 26 in Portland, Oregon, with an option to attend the conference virtually. This year the Ware Lecture will be offered by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, author of the books "How to be an Antiracist" and "Stamped from the Beginning: A Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America."
GA is a combination of talks, workshops, music, and worship. It is an amazing opportunity to learn about the breadth and depth of our faith. It's not too late to register. If you'd like more information about GA, including information on how to attend, and how to attend as a voting delegate (an option, not required), please be in touch and I'll happily provide more information. (I will be attending GA virtually. If you do decide to register, please let me know. It’s interesting to stay in contact during GA and reflect as we are learning.)
In connection,
Rev. Sue

Maryland Sets High Standards
for Clean Energy
|
|
The Maryland General Assembly enacted the most ambitious clean-energy goals in the country in the legislative session completed mid-April. The goal – carbon neutral by 2045 – will require drastic reductions in the use of fossil fuels, both for vehicles and for heating buildings. Whether Maryland can achieve that figure will depend on how determinedly state agencies work to produce effective plans.
Kim Coble, executive director of the Maryland League of Conservation Voters, said that implementation will require voters to elect state reps and a governor who make strong commitments to the environment.
In concert with the League, a corps of UUers from Chestertown and Easton urged our delegates and state senators to support the Climate Solutions Now Act, and we were proud to see several approve one successful measure: Senator Stephen Hershey and several delegates helped pass major tax breaks to
developers of community solar installations that aid low-income households. They added their support despite their political party’s opposing view, and we thank them for their courage.

Social Concerns/Social Justice Committee
|
|
Many thanks to all that contributed to the collection for Shore Rivers in April. We collected a total of $689.26 which is enough to sponsor a testing site on the Chester River in the Crumpton area for this season. The Chester Riverkeeper, Annie Richards, was delighted to receive UUCR's contribution.

UUCR Outreach Collection for May
|
|
|
Our May collection is for Ukraine. The Social Concerns committee sought to find, among the many worthy organizations helping Ukraine, a beneficiary in tune with the values of Unitarian Universalism.
We’re pleased to ask for your generosity for Faithify (a philanthropic arm of UU on behalf of many causes) in cooperation with the International Women’s Convocation for a specific drive on behalf of the Providence Charity Organization of the Hungarian Unitarian Church which, so far has been able to take the following humanitarian actions:
- Attend to the needs of hundreds of Ukrainian mothers and children transiting through Kolozsvár/Cluj railway station
- Provide housing and other support for 38 refugees in the Kolozsvár/Cluj area (more than half are children)
-
Transport urgent supplies to Transcarpathia (southwest Ukraine), consisting of nonperishable foods and other items needed by shelters housing internally displaced Ukrainians (cots, mattresses, sleeping bags, flashlights, light bulbs, hotplates)
-
Deliver a second shipment of medical supplies to a health center in Odessa (disinfectants, bandages, pain killers, syringes, flu medications, milk powder, and diapers)
-
Launch a kindergarten class for Ukrainian refugee children in the day care center of the Hungarian Unitarian Church in Kolozsvár/Cluj
Contribute by sending a check to the church office, made out to UUCR specifying "Faithify/Ukraine" in the memo line; or donate online at the church website using the "Donate" button (click here) and "Custom Amount," specifying "Faithify/Ukraine Outreach Collection" in the comment section. Any questions, please contact Marilee Taussig or Bob Bjorke.
