THIS SUNDAY'S

WORSHIP SERVICE

"Building Connections - Our Annual Intergenerational Thanksgiving Service"

Rev. Sue Browning, Minister

Jan Sprinkel, Service Leader

In-Person & Zoom

Sunday, November 19, 2023

We invite all in the community—especially children and families—to be a part of our annual intergenerational Thanksgiving service. Through songs, stories, and the ritual of setting a shared table, we'll remind one another of the many ways that we experience gratitude in our lives. The service will be led by Rev. Sue Browning and Jan Sprinkel and last about an hour.

Once again this year, we're inviting contributions of bread (or muffins, or rolls), apples, or other fruit that we can use in our ritual of setting a table big enough for all! (And in our "bread swap," we'll each get to take home some bread!) We welcome all to this special service! If you have questions, please be in touch with Rev. Sue or the UUCR office.

  • Rev. Sue Browning, Minister
  • Jan Sprinkel, Service Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician
  • Kim Agee & Fantaye Kehm, Youth & Teen Welcome

Sunday, November 26 — In-Person & Zoom

"Go Ask ALICE"

Who is ALICE, and why should we care? "ALICE" is an acronym for "Asset Limited, Income Constrained, but Employed," — in other words, the working poor. The United Way generates ALICE Reports from census metadata in at least 23 states every two years. These ALICE Reports are used to raise awareness and understanding of the real nature of poverty (vs. the absurd definition set by the federal poverty line), target funding to areas of greatest need and impact, and inspire action and innovative solutions (i.e., "change"). This talk and discussion will introduce this valuable tool for economic activism and challenge us to question the morality of an economy where the paychecks of nearly three out of ten citizens don't cover their basic needs at the end of the month.

  • Rev. Bob Clegg, Guest Speaker
  • Marilee Taussig, Service Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician
  • Linda Dutton & Fantaye Kehm, Youth & Teen Welcome

"Sometimes We Just Don't Know"

Ever feel that you are wrestling an issue or a decision to death? What does it take to be at peace with just not knowing? At this service with Rev. Sue Browning, we'll consider the experience of the power of being ok with that which we will never fully understand — being ok with some mystery in life.

  • Rev. Sue Browning, Minister
  • Annie Lavin, Service Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician
  • Amy Warner & Fantaye Kehm, Youth & Teen Welcome

NOVEMBER POTLUCK

Come out to UUCR on Friday, Nov. 17 at 6 pm for a stress-free, pre-Thanksgiving meal and social time. Bring a dish to share and your preferred beverage.

Many thanks to Catherine Brooks for volunteering to host it!

On November 18, Philip Dutton will be giving a personal solo concert at UUCR to benefit Minary's Dream Alliance. This concert will be different from what you have heard him play in church or in his band, The Alligators. The concert will consist of mostly original songs in a loose autobiographical order, many of which he has never before played in public. 100% of the proceeds of this concert will go to Minary's Dream Alliance's (MDA) general operating budget. MDA is an organization that Philip has supported since its inception and is well known to UUCR. For more information on MDA's work, go to https://minarysdreamalliance.org/

Classical pianist Michael Casey is rapidly making his mark in Kent County music circles. Most recently, he was the musical director of The Addams Family production at The Garfield and has secured a place as the final performer at The Mainstay’s eclectic monthly Open Mic series. Michael operates a piano studio out of his home in Rock Hall and continues to perform throughout the county in inns and small churches. His program at The Mainstay focuses on the music of the French Impressionist composers — Debussy, Ravel, and Satie.
