THIS SUNDAY'S
WORSHIP SERVICE
|
|
|
"Is the Grass Always Greener"
Rev. Sue Browning, Minister
Nancy Holland, Service Leader
Michael Casey, Music
In Person & Zoom
Sunday, October 16, 2022
The Ten Commandments include the warning, “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house…” Many stories often center on a theme of jealousy. We scroll social media postings and find ourselves asking, "Am I doing as well as… ? Am I doing better than… ?" At this service with Rev. Sue Browning we’ll reflect on alternatives to the pull of envy in our lives.
So we can begin the discussion promptly at 10 am, please sign into Zoom ( click here) or arrive by no later than 9:50 am.
Welcoming Families and Children on Sunday Mornings
Each Sunday, UUCR offers childcare and simple age-appropriate activities for children of all ages. If you have any questions about UUCR's programming for families and children, please be in touch with Rev. Sue.

Sunday, October 23 — In Person & ZOOM
"In a Broken and Fearful World"
This Sunday we welcome Rev. Jill Tolbert, a minister at our neighboring Presbyterian Church on Gateway Drive. She and her husband, Rev. Joel, came to the Eastern Shore and PCC in late 2020 - a few months before Covid! This morning she continues the special tradition we have enjoyed over the years when PCC clergy cross Gateway Drive on a Sunday morning to join in our service and deliver a sermon. In the month of October our UU Services have centered around the theme of Courage. Rev. Jill will continue this in her sermon, “In a Broken and Fearful World…”
"In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, …to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.” This service will explore the brokenness in our world that pushes us toward fear, and consider various stories of courage that might pull us from fear to faithful action.” Come join us!
- Rev. Jill Tolbert, Guest Speaker
- Annie Lavin, Service Leader
- Michael Casey, Rebekah Hock, and Meredith Hadaway, Musicians
Sunday, October 30 — ZOOM ONLY, Joint with UUFE
On October 30 at 10 am UUCR will have a joint worship service with the UU Fellowship at Easton (UUFE). The service will be Zoom-only for both congregations. Why do this? For over a year during Covid the two congregations were together for services every week, and we want to continue to build the relationship. Also, virtual services also offer alternative ways to present themes and music. We are finalizing our speaker for the morning. Stay tuned for details!

Report from the Special Congregational Meeting on October 9, 2022
|
|
A Special Congregational Meeting was held on October 9, 2022, to approve replacement of the sanctuary heating and cooling system, using funds from the Capital Reserve Fund. Nineteen voting members were present, more than required to establish a quorum. Jim Lavin presented details of four proposals received from two contractors. A discussion of the types of equipment, efficiency ratings, and costs of each proposal followed, including many good questions and comments from members. At the end of the discussion the congregation voted overwhelmingly to approve the Starkey Mechanical, Inc., Option #1, a Bryant Heater and A/C System with a heating system efficiency of 92% and an A/C system with a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating of 14. The unit includes a UV scrubber to improve indoor air quality. The cost of the unit is $9,500 (the congregation approved costs not to exceed $10,200).

Your PR and Outreach Committee is grateful to all who participated in UUCR’s spectacular 30th Birthday Party on October 2, particularly:
Pat Bjorke and Amy Warner, who have written a history of UUCR since our founding in 1992.
History Presenters Clark Bjorke, Jackie Mathwich, Vida Morley, Diane Shields, and Amy Warner.**
Rev. Sue, who wove the telling of our history seamlessly into our worship service.
Joan Biehler, Catherine Brooks, Lynn Dolinger, Lynn Geisert, Nancy Holland, Joy Kim, Annie Lavin, Vida Morley, and Jan Whitney, who set up the food tables and cleaned up the kitchen afterwards!
Darlene Wiggers, who found us wonderful napkins and food trays, and did probably fifty other things for the party that no one knows about!
And finally, to all who contributed the fabulous food! Most delicious lunch ever!
With appreciation,
Your PROCC Team: John Ramsey, David Biehler, Jane Hardy, and Elisabeth Tully

Save the Date: Friday, December 9!
|
|
|
Calling all Soup Makers, Bread Bakers,
and Everyone Who Enjoys Soup and Bread!
Here’s our next, most cozy, social event: On Friday evening, December 9, UUCR will host a “Soupluck Dinner Fun/draiser,“ location TBA. This is not a potluck dinner; unless you are a soup or bread maker, just bring yourselves, any guests you’d like to invite, whatever libation you would enjoy, and your appetite! A light dessert will be provided. The cost for attending will be $15 per person; tickets will be sold ahead of time.
Ten different soup makers will each bring a crockpot full of their favorite/best soup, five different bread makers will each bring homemade loaves, and all in attendance will get ready to sample soups and breads! People can buy loaves (@$6) to take home and order quarts (@$10) of their choice of soups for pick up later.
Soup (bisques, chowders, and chilis also most welcome) makers and bread makers, WE NEED YOU! Send Jane Hardy, janewhardy@gmail.com, a couple of varieties you’d be willing to make, so that we don’t have too many duplications.
Look for more details in upcoming issues of Reflections and be sure to mark your calendars for a grand time on Friday evening, December 9.

Hurricane Ian
UUA Disaster Relief Fund
|
|
The Unitarian Universalists Association has set up a fund to aid with disaster relief in Florida and other areas impacted by the storm. In particular, they are seeking to support UU congregations and the communities they serve. You can go online to donate at giving.uua.org/disaster-relief , or text DISASTER to 51555, or by phone at (888) 792-5885 | Select option 6. You can also contribute by mail to Unitarian Universalist Association, Attn: Gift Processing, 24 Farnsworth St., Boston, MA 02210-1409.
Your contribution to the UUA Disaster Relief Fund now will allow them to grant recovery funds right away to Florida congregations who need it — and any other congregations in Ian's path — in the days or weeks before FEMA aid or flood insurance (which few can afford) reaches those in need.

UUCR Social Justice Work for October 2022
Will Focus on Local Low Income Housing.
|
|
We have identified Rebuilding Together Kent County (www.rebuildingtogetherkcmd.org) as the local non profit we will collect funds for throughout October. Rebuilding Together Kent County (RTKC) is part of a national organization. They work in local partnership with community volunteers and local contractors to provide free home repairs, safety modifications, and links to community resources to keep homeowners with limited resources living independently in homes that are safe, warm, and dry.
You can contribute by writing a check made out to UUCR specifying “Rebuilding Together” in the memo line and either placing it in the offering basket on Sundays or sending it to the church office. You can also donate online at the UUCR website using the “Donate” button (click here) and “Custom Amount,” specifying “Rebuilding Together” in the comment section.
Please make your donation before October 31.
