THIS SUNDAY'S

WORSHIP SERVICE

"Doors Wide Open, Hearts Wide Open"

WATER COMMUNION

Rev. Sue Browning, Minister

Marilee Taussig, Service Leader

In-Person & Zoom

Sunday, September 17, 2023

How might we continually welcome one another and welcome the stranger? How might a vision of radical hospitality guide our coming year together? At this service led by Rev. Sue Browning, we'll reflect on the "gift of welcome" as a foundation in our Unitarian Universalist faith. The service will include our annual Water Communion ritual. All are welcome!

What is UU Water Communion?

Our service on Sunday, September 17, will include our annual Water Communion.

Water Communion is a UU ritual that helps us begin the congregational year and symbolizes the blending of our hopes and gifts.

For this ritual, all are invited to bring water that has meaning to them to the service, usually brought in a small bottle or jar. The water might be from your tap, from a puddle, from a local pond or river, or from your travels. We'll have plenty of water available that can serve symbolically as water that has meaning to you. During the service, there will be an opportunity to come forward and pour the water you brought into a large communal bowl at the front of the sanctuary. The collected water will represent the many ways our lives come together in community.

If you have any questions about this water ceremony, please check with Rev. Sue.

"We Begin Again in Love"

As Jews around the world pause to observe Yom Kippur, might we too pause and ask, "How do atonement and forgiveness enter into our UU theologies? At the end of our days, will there be grudges, regrets, old hurts, and angers that we’ve held on to? Or can we find a way to remind ourselves to let go of those things?" In this service, based in part on a Church of the Larger Fellowship interview with Rev. Rob Eller-Isaacs, Rev. John Wright will think about forgiveness and, as Eller-Isaacs has so beautifully put it, “begin again in love.”

  • Rev. John Wright, Guest Speaker
  • Jan Sprinkel, Service Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician
  • Jackie Mathwich & Fantaye Kehm, Youth & Teen Welcome

Sunday, October 1 — In-Person & Zoom

"Promises We Make"

It's been ten years since our minister, Rev. Sue Browning, was ordained as a Unitarian Universalist minister. Recently she shared, "The vocation of parish ministry has been pretty much what I was trained for, and of course there is always room to grow. The deeper challenge has been to live fully into the vows I took at ordination." At this service, Rev. Sue will reflect on lessons learned since her ordination, and we'll consider the challenges we each face when we strive to live into promises we make.

Special Congregational Meeting - HVAC September 24

The UUCR Board would like to announce that there will be a Congregational Meeting to be held after church on September 24th, in the sanctuary. We will discuss the need to replace the heating and air conditioning unit for the office, foyer, and other connected rooms. The unit for the sanctuary was replaced last year. At the meeting we will be seeking approval to spend the necessary funds for a new HVAC unit and a dehumidifier.

Thanks to Jim Lavin and the Building & Grounds Committee for their work to keep our building in good working order!

If you are interested in participating but cannot attend the
