THIS SUNDAY'S
WORSHIP SERVICE
"Liberal is Not a Four Letter Word"

Rev. Karyn Marsh, Guest Speaker

Nancy Holland, Service Leader

Al Martinez, Music

In Person & Zoom

Sunday, September 25, 2022

Freedom is a word that has been bandied about in the United States for many years. Conservatives of late have been claiming to be the true proponents of freedom and labeling liberals as oppressors and communists. Yet, the root of the word, liberal, comes from the Latin word for freedom. Unitarian Universalism has long been known as a liberal faith tradition — as “a faith for the free” in the words of Unitarian theologian James Luther Adams. In this service, Rev. Karyn Marsh will explore what liberal means in Unitarian Universalism.

So we can begin the discussion promptly at 10 am, please sign into Zoom (click here) or arrive by no later than 9:50 am.

"In the Name of Religion"

Most of us can recite litanies of harm done in the name of religion. Across faith traditions, power struggles and debates have caused violence and pain. Can we identify the good done in the name of religion? Join Rev. Sue Browning as we explore positive contributions of religious traditions in the world and celebrate the 30th anniversary of our congregation.

  • Amy Warner, Service Leader

YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE!
We continue to have frequent incidences of lights and fans remaining turned on after everyone has left the building, doors ajar, and now a window left open. To save both energy and UUCR money, and for the security of the building and its contents, if you are the last person exiting the building, please make sure all lights and fans are turned off in all rooms, that all windows are closed and locked, and that all doors are securely latched and locked. The main door, the side ramp door, and the deck door may not securely latch as they close and therefore may need a tug or push to make sure that they are.

— B&G Committee

There are people entering the building and failing to sign the logbook near the ramp door during the week (M-Sa) and also the check-in list on Sundays. Our Covid Protocol continues to have this requirement for not only the safety of others, but also of yourself in the unlikely event that we need to do contact tracing. You are required to sign in even if you are the only one within the building. The Sunday check-in list also serves as the record of how many individuals are in attendance at our in-person worship services.

Help Us Celebrate UUCR’s 30th Birthday!

Join us for a potluck luncheon after service on Sunday, October 2, as we mark our church’s 30th year. Bring a dish or beverage to share and we’ll supply the rest! Please let us know what dish you will bring, along with the number of people attending when you RSVP. We'll also be providing dessert with enough birthday cake for everyone.

Can you help with set up and clean up? Please let us know when you RSVP at uuofchesterriver@gmail.com whether you can assist with setting up and/or taking down. Thanks!
HELP STILL NEEDED
The UUCR Membership Committee is enthused to learn that many of the UUCR Covid restrictions have been lifted. This means that we will begin serving coffee (and maybe even treats) after Sunday services! And hopefully scheduling monthly potluck dinners again soon.

There are signup sheets posted on the "white board" for both "Greeters" and "Coffee Makers." Please sign up for a Sunday!! Training is available if you have not done it before.
Social Justice Cmte. Seeking Partners
The Social Justice Committee is looking for partners — Please check out the easel in the foyer to lend your support to the social justice issues that matter to you. A member of the SJ Committee will contact you to see how you might support these efforts in the coming year. Thanks for lending your voice!
The UUCR Committee on Ministry
The Committee on Ministry (COM) is a resource to you and our minister, Sue Browning. If you have a need or would like to talk about the ministry of UUCR, feel free to reach out to one of us (John Ramsey, Jackie Mathwich, or M.Q. Riding), we will be happy to offer a listening ear.

We will keep our membership up to date on the ongoing activities of the committee through the newsletter and in person at Sunday services. The committee is reaching out to the UU Fellowship at Easton to understand how their COM works. Our thought is that working together we may be able to learn about what ministries we have in-common and share what works here and there.

Finally, this month UUCR celebrates our 30th anniversary! Congratulations to that start-up team for lighting a chalice in 1992 and the entire membership for continuing the flame these 30 years since — here’s to the next 30!

Faithfully,

COM

You are encouraged to share your joys and sorrows with the UUCR Pastoral Associates (see below). This team is a mixed group — but all have had previous life experiences and a variety of professional training in counseling and philosophy. Please contact one, or several of us, if you “want to talk.”
