THIS SUNDAY'S

WORSHIP SERVICE

"Promises We Make"

Rev. Sue Browning, Minister

Nancy Holland, Service Leader

In-Person & Zoom

Sunday, October 1, 2023

It's been ten years since our minister, Rev. Sue Browning, was ordained as a Unitarian Universalist minister. Recently she shared, "The vocation of parish ministry has been pretty much what I was trained for, and of course there is always room to grow. The deeper challenge has been to live fully into the vows I took at ordination." At this service, Rev. Sue will reflect on lessons learned since her ordination, and we'll consider the challenges we each face when we strive to live into promises we make.

Upcoming Worship Services

Sunday, October 8 — In-Person & Zoom

"The Grandmothers' Wisdom"

For the sovereign indigenous nations on this continent, the elder women are the keepers of history, of community ties, of family heritage, and of tribal history. Our own Unitarian Universalist faith has ties to the harm of residential schools and colonizing

behaviors. As a people of faith seeking to move toward substantive support and justice work for indigenous peoples, we’ll look at our own place in both the hurt and the healing of our native siblings.

  • Lora Powell-Haney, Guest Speaker
  • Annie Lavin, Service Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician
  • Linda Dutton & Fantaye Kehm, Youth & Teen Welcome

Sunday, October 15 — In-Person & Zoom

"Immigration Stories"

All life journeys each come with twists, turns, and uncertainty. Immigrants face more than their share, often being treated as pawns in our political debates while at the same time being hired for deeply challenging work. At this service with Rev. Sue Browning, we’ll reflect on the realities of being an immigrant in 2023 and consider where support is useful and needed as we live into our commitments for justice and compassion.

Minister's Column

Ten Years Ago

On September 29, 2013, I was ordained by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington. It’s amazing that it has been 10 years.

I’ve found myself revisiting the experience frequently this week. I’ve scanned through the pictures (a few included here) and can still sense what an honor it was to be centered that day. I recall family, friends, and colleagues traveling for the event and meals and celebrations throughout the weekend. I found the order of service and vividly remember the rituals — the words, the music, the laying on of hands, and the presentation of the stole.

In the Unitarian Universalist tradition, it is after ordination that you begin using the title "Reverend" and may wear a stole. After five years of preparation, a threshold was crossed that day. It was a chance for me to offer gratitude to the many who had supported my journey toward ordination. It was a time when they formally assured me of their ongoing support.

In my sermon this coming Sunday, I will reflect on the commitments I made that Sunday afternoon 10 years ago, my learning along the way, and consider the many ways the commitments we each make guide our life's journey.

It’s been a decade of learning, and of course the learning continues. It always will.

In memory and gratitude,

Rev. Sue

PS: Back in October 2013, I preached a sermon, "Tradition of Ordination," which included background Unitarian Universalist ordinations and reflection on my experience. To read this sermon please CLICK HERE.

October's Social Justice Outreach

The Social Justice Committee is planning our first outreach of this year to be on a large and new topic: Democracy in the US! We normally partner with a local group, but this year we felt as if new and unprecedented issues threatening the democracy of the United States required an unusual approach. In particular, a year before the next presidential election, we thought it might be appropriate to look at the systemic threats to representation for all, no matter what party one belongs to. We found many organizations (often newly organized) doing work in this arena. The one that frames complex questions in a way that everyday people might understand is Represent.us, and their education fund will be the beneficiary of this month's outreach offering.
We invite you to a discussion after the service on Sunday, October 8th to view this short 12-minute video. (Feel free to view it ahead of time here. It's kinda fun!) Specifically, we would like to hear your questions and thoughts about three things the video addresses:
  • End gerrymandering
  • Reform elections to be more representative (ranked choice voting, etc.)
  • Get elite money out of politics.
Please mark your calendar for a brief (less than an hour) discussion after the service on Sunday, October 8th. We will provide a light lunch!

Pastoral Care & Connection

You are encouraged to share your joys and sorrows with the UUCR Pastoral Associates (see below). This team is a mixed group — but all have had previous life experiences and a variety of professional training in counseling and philosophy. Please contact one, or several of us, if you “want to talk.”
