THIS WEEK'S WORSHIP SERVICE
"Hands Across the Divide" sculpture in Derry, Ireland

"Truth and Reconciliation in Ireland"
We just returned from two weeks in Ireland, and I was much impressed with several conversations I had with locals about "The Troubles" and the aftermath. I was struck by the similarity with the problems in post-apartheid South Africa. There, too, there is much to learn about living with the past and focusing into the future.

In-person & Zoom
When we act in a deeply countercultural way, when we pause, breathe, and create space to hear that still small voice inside, it is a sacred act. We start our exploration of deep listening this month with deep listening to the divine within, deeply listening to each other, and practicing being beloved community.

Beloveds,
This Sunday, Annie and Rev. Libby Smith brought us the wonderful wisdom of Henri Nouwen (1932-1996) in the context of deeply listening to those around us. Through listening, we invite people to bring their whole selves and presence. Henri Nouwen discussed how our society is fragmented by technological and social change and shifting norms, creating and feeding isolation and despair as a foundation for his offerings of the wounded healer.
Henri Nouwen invites us to develop our self-awareness and explore our own imperfection and brokenness, growing our own compassion, empathy, and care to become a "wounded healer." The wounded healer accompanies people on their journey in life with listening, compassion, and empathy. The call for empathy and accompaniment resonates with Henri Nouwen's reflections on the destabilizing forces of the post-denominational age (technology, social change, mobility, shifting norms) and the liberation that is possible through these changes. The wounded healer can be a powerful presence to support transformative and liberatory growth and healing.
May our ministry abound with listening, compassion, empathy, and care. May our congregation be a compassionate, stabilizing, and transformational presence in our larger community.
Blessings and joy, Beloveds
Rev. Kathryn

THIS SUNDAY — PICK UP POSTCARDS FOR FLORIDA VOTERS AFTER THE SERVICE
Postcards to voters have proven to be an effective way to get out the vote! The Social Justice Committee is offering their second opportunity to write postcards to voters—this time we're committed to 200. You can pick up packets of 10 or 20 in the foyer after the service on 9/26.
All of the information you'll need to write the postcards will be given to you. You will need to buy stamps ($.56) and mail your completed postcards between October 1 & 15.
These postcards are going out to women voters in Broward County, Florida. Their names and addresses are provided through UU the Vote's initiative with the Center for Common Ground, which offers its support to help reach voters in key states.
This is a simple, easy way to get involved in the outcome of the election. Please email Amy at amylydia10@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

MARCY DUNN RAMSEY — AT THE BOOKPLATE
Celebrating Her Published Works,
and a Birthday!
The Bookplate is continuing their 2024 season of author events with a special local celebration on Friday, October 4th. Guests are welcome to join local artist and author, Marcy Dunn Ramsey and the Bookplate staff for a Friday evening birthday party, reading and book signing at the shop on Cross Street.
As anyone who grew up on the Eastern Shore in the 1990s can attest, Marcy Dunn Ramsey illustrated their childhood. Bringing to life the stories of Priscilla Cummings, Jennifer Keats Curtis, Jeffrey Holland, Janie Meneely, and many others, Marcy has made a sizable impact on the next generation of Chesapeake Bay stewards. As the 4th of October also happens to be her daughter Rosie Ramsey Granillo’s birthday, The Bookplate is hosting a party. Stop by to hear Marcy talk about her years as a children’s illustrator, grab a slice of cake, and hear her read selections from the books she authored. Children of all ages are welcome!
For more event details, or to reserve your seats, contact The Bookplate at 410-778-4167 or contact@thebookplate.net. These events are free and open to the public, but reservations are recommended. The Bookplate is located at 112 S. Cross Street in Chestertown.
(Excerpted from an email from The Bookplate. Marcy is a "UUCR friend" and the wife of UUCR member John Ramsey.)
