THIS WEEK'S WORSHIP SERVICE

Sunday, November 2 — 10 am

In-person and Zoom

"The Poetry of Joy"

Inspired by the pragmatic and soul-grounding poetry of Ross Gay and the comforting poetry of John O'Donohue, let's bring and share our favorite poems of joy. Let us explore the joy that is our birthright as the days shorten in the cycle of life.

  • Rev. Kathryn Adams, Minister
  • Kim Agee, Worship Leader
  • Michael Casey, Music
  • Rebekah Hardy & Meredith Hadaway, Guest Music
  • Lynn Geisert, Greeter
  • Elisabeth Tully, Coffee Host

Please CLICK HERE to join us via Zoom.

This week's music:

  • "When Our Heart is in A Holy Place" # 1008 (teal hymnal)
  • "When the Spirit Says Do" # 1024 (teal hymnal)

UPCOMING WORSHIP SERVICES

NOV 09 | "What Time is IT?," Rev. Greg Chute, Guest Speaker

— In-person & Zoom

“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven."

The book of Ecclesiastes suggests that there is a time and season for everything. Let's explore that idea together.

NOV 16 | "We Are Grateful to Our Sponsors: In Gratitude to Our Ancestors," SaraRuth Wekoye Davis, Guest Speaker — In-person & Zoom

Who are our Sponsors, those who nourished us into existence? Gratitude, at its foundation, is to be thankful for life, for our part and place in this life, and to honor our Sources of Life in each moment of our existence. We will explore together, Our Sponsors, and how we might be the Sponsors worthy of the Life flowing from us, with wisdom texts, both new and old.

NOV 23 | "Grounding in Connection," Rev. Kathryn Adams, Minister — In-person & Zoom

As we enter this holiday season, I want to ground us in how we communicate. We have talked a lot about communicating across differences. During the autumn harvest season, we may have some opportunities to communicate across differences with people we love. Author Charles Duhigg helps us unlock the language of connection. May we use this language of connection in living our values and to bring joy, love, and transformation.

MINISTER'S COLUMN

As this edition of Reflections posts, the tall ships will be setting up for the Sultana Downrigging Festival. They are breathtaking. As we look at the rigging and the sailing vessels, we are drawn to reflect on our connections to the nautical ancestry of our community. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

We may also reflect on our personal ancestors. Who they were, how they lived. Their suffering and joys. The labor that made generation after generation possible. I look forward to celebrating this with our community at our Service of Remembrance. We are so much more than our ancestors' dreams, together.

These reflections build our capacity to live with a grounded awareness and acceptance of our own mortality. Ancestry connects us to those who came before and those who will come afterward. We will have an opportunity to foster our connections across generations at the Multi-Generational Game Night.

I look forward to celebrating our connections on 1 November starting at 5pm.

MULTI-GENERATIONAL GAME NIGHT

— NOV 1

It's once again time for First Saturday's

Multi-generational Game Night, which will take place on November 1st at 6:30 pm. If you're attending the All Saints' Day Service, please consider staying afterwards for this opportunity to enjoy some friendly competition with your fellow congregants.

Daylight Saving Time ends this

Sunday, November 2.

Remember to set your clocks back

by one hour on Saturday night.

Tickets are $25 each and will be on sale

after Sunday services, starting on November 2.

This event is one of our major annual fund-(and FUN)raisers — support UUCR by purchasing your tickets as soon as possible. You’ll be delighted with the array of soups, breads, libations, and desserts on hand. Fill up in plenty of time to attend the Chestertown Chorale’s "A Celtic Christmas" holiday concert, which starts at 7:30, just down Gateway Drive.

Questions? Contact any of the Soup Supper Team: Linda Dutton, Jane Hardy, Joy Kim, and Mary Pritchard.

FIRST THURSDAY CONVERSATIONS

CANCELED FOR NOVEMBER

Rev. Kathryn's office hours on the first Thursday will be canceled in November. Please call or text to set up an appointment as needed.

PRE-ORDER YOUR MEMORIAL BRICK

UUCR's Woodland Memorial Garden brick circle includes engraved bricks for those UUCR members who have passed away. Previously, an individual's family covered the cost of engraving a brick with their name, but UUCR is now prepared to cover those costs. We will be ordering bricks soon for members who have passed away recently. Prices are lower for orders of five or more bricks, which also includes shipping. To take advantage of the reduced cost, we would like to "pre-order" some bricks. Please reach out to Diane Shields or a member of the Building and Grounds Committee if you would like to have your brick included in this order.

Please note: the pre-ordered bricks will be stored at UUCR until the time comes when they are needed to be placed in the garden.

DEMOCRACY CORNER

Easy Way to Contact Our Representative and Senators

(excerpted from Robert Hubbell’s

Today’s Edition Newsletter, 10/28/25)

Democracy.io is probably the easiest way to send a message to all three congress people representing you — two senators and one representative — simultaneously. You do not even have to have their names and email addresses as democracy.io finds this information for you. You can even use democracy.io to send messages to senators and reps in other states.

About this column – Non-partisan issues based on our UU values and principles, featuring summaries, links to organizations, and opportunities for engagement.

Please contact me if you have ideas or feedback.  Jane Hardy
