THIS WEEK'S WORSHIP SERVICE

March 9

"Recovering Our Unitarian and Universalist Roots."

"I think that in our ongoing struggle to define or describe "Unitarian universalism" we have lost track of the essence of both Unitarianism and Universalism. What are their origins? What made them controversial/heretical? What legacy do they pass on to us today that makes them each unique and still relevant?"

  • Reverend Greg Chute
  • Service Leaders: Nancy Holland and Connie Schroth
  • Michael Casey, Musician

  • Coffee Host: Michael Bennet with guidance from Joy Kim
  • Greeter: Sydney Brooks

Hymn: # 194 (gray hymnal) – “Faith is a Forest”

Hymn: # 287 (gray hymnal) – “Faith of the Larger Liberty”

A message from Reverend Kathryn Adams

As I am recovering from an illness, this year has been a bad one for the flu, I am reflecting on how little we can do by ourselves. The value of interdependence is present in all the mystical traditions regardless of denomination, science (we are all made of star stuff) and game theory.

Dehumanization is the ultimate betrayal of our innate interdependence. This past Sunday, Annie invited us to "dance on the edge between doubt and trust" as a place of creativity. This invites us to celebrate that we are all stardust, and embodies our independence. On this edge, we recognize our mutuality, our power to, and our power with. I will talk more about some awesome work by john.a.powell (he doesn't capitalize his name on purpose), but for today I want to highlight the power of language. When we talk of people or groups of people as insects, animals, disgusting terms with a functional MRI assessing the activity in our brain - the areas that recognize other humans don't light up. When we break that connection, people can do terrible things. When we live honoring our connection to all life, people can do amazing things. As with so much else, it is our choice.

So my call today is: who have you loved? Whose humanity have you seen? celebrated? How we are with each other is how we inject trust, love, and humanity into our community. One by one, each relationship is how we turn the tide in the flow of life.

In gratitude,

Kathryn
