THIS WEEK'S WORSHIP SERVICE

Sunday, October 20, 2024 - 10 a.m.

"Deeply Listening to Our Siblings in Our Human Family"

Beloveds, our stories are always grounded in our own experiences. These stories shape how we see the world. Deep listening to stories grounded in different experiences gives us the opportunity to see just a little more truth. Deep listening can be apocalyptic—a path to true uncovering.

UPCOMING WORSHIP SERVICES

October 27 | "The Good-Bad Old Days" — In-person & Zoom

As the saying goes, "Nostalgia just ain't what it used to be." In this sermon, I examine the rose-colored glasses through which we so often examine the past, try to put that into perspective, and think about why it might be important to our ever-changing faith tradition. We’ll look at some of our past UU practices and see how our faith continues to evolve, reflecting the needs and beliefs of today’s world.

  • Rev. John Wright, Guest Speaker
  • Annie Lavin, Worship Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician

November 03 | "Healing with Community, Belonging, and Love" — In-person & Zoom

Building on our discussions on deep listening, it is time to decide. Today we will explore repair and crisis contemplation. We live in a time of many crises. With integrity, wholeness, and love, we can be a village that responds communally with belonging, resistance, and resilience. In love and lament, we can decide.

  • Rev. Kathryn Adams, Minister
  • Nancy Holland, Worship Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician

November 10 | "Duty to the Past, Duty to the Future" — In-person & Zoom

As the results of the recent election are digested, the nation pauses to remember the service and sacrifice of people who served in the Armed Forces, and to also be mindful of what we owe to those who will inherit this country, this world from us. What is the unfinished business of our time?

  • Rev. Paul Boothby, Guest Speaker
  • Kim Agee, Worship Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician

MINISTER'S COLUMN

Beloveds,

This week, as the experience of autumn has arrived, I find myself reflecting on the wisdom of Fr. Richard Rohr.

"The first act of divine revelation is creation itself. The first Bible is the Bible of nature. It was written at least 13.8 billion years ago, at the moment that we call the Big Bang, long before the Bible of words. 'Ever since God created the world, God’s everlasting power and divinity—however invisible—are there for the mind to see in the things that God has made.' (Romans 1:20)."

As the beauty of the leaves turning surrounds me, the chill of the autumn air inspires me to layer up—there is so much beauty in nature, it grounds me. A powerful reminder that I too am part of this wondrous creation. I am a member of this one human family because we are all part of this wondrous creation. This Sunday, we will take our exploration of listening into listening to our siblings in the human family—those whose experiences have guided them toward different perceptions of the world in which we live, how to live in it, and more.

In compassion,

Rev. Kathryn

OUTREACH COLLECTION FOR UULM-MD

The Social Justice Committee chose the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of Maryland as the recipient for its first outreach collection this church year. UULM-MD, based in Annapolis, works to advocate for issues that advance freedom, equality, and justice. They work collaboratively to identify priority legislation for the Maryland General Assembly and get people involved in education and advocacy for this legislation.

To those of you who have donated so far, we give our sincere thanks. If you have not given yet, and would like to do so, please visit the UUCR website, select the "donate" option, and follow the directions. Please indicate that your donation is for the UULM-MD outreach collection. The deadline for your donation is this Friday, 10/18.

GOOD NEWS! PARKING LOT UPDATE...

It is a lot like the pieces of a puzzle finally fitting together… the determination to get to the end is worth it! If all goes well, we will have a newly paved parking lot by November. Bob Coleman has been in contact with two contractors, and the one selected has room in his schedule to complete the job in the next two weeks. As the timing firms up, we will let everyone know about the next steps.

Thank you to the Building and Grounds committee for working on this improvement to make our church more welcoming and safer!

I'M BEGGING!

It's getting ruff to fetch volunteers!

We really need people to sign up as Service Greeters and Coffee Hosts and also as Potluck Hosts. Potlucks can be held at the host's home, UUCR, or their choice of location. Training and/or assistance is available if you are interested. Please sign up on the sheets provided on the whiteboard.

OPERATION GREEN LIGHT

In support of veterans this year, we'd like to participate in Operation Green Light by lighting up UUCR with green lights. If anyone has outdoor floodlights or other outdoor temporary lighting they would be willing to lend us during this time please let the office know. Solar lights would be great if possible. They do not need to have green bulbs as we can place a temporary green film over white lights for the duration. THANKS!

MEMBERS' DAUGHTER NEEDS APARTMENT

Connie & Larry Schroth's daughter needs an inexpensive, one-bedroom apartment near Chestertown beginning January 1. She does not have pets. Please contact Connie at cws1943@icloud.com or 410-708-2708 if you know of any availabilities.

TREE PLANTING IN CRESTVIEW OPEN SPACE, GATEWAY DRIVE ON OCTOBER 26

The Crestview neighborhood, through a grant with Shore Rivers, will be planting 38 native trees in a mowed grass area of Crestview on Saturday, October 26, beginning at 10 AM. Students from the Washington College baseball team will do most of the digging and planting, but volunteers are needed to "supervise" to assure Shore Rivers' planting procedures are followed. Shore Rivers staff and "tree stewards" will be on site as well. If you are interested in helping, contact Diane Shields 410-490-0492 or dashdiane@gmail.com.
