THIS WEEK'S WORSHIP SERVICE

Sunday, October 27, 2024 - 10 a.m.

"The Good-Bad Old Days"

As the saying goes, "Nostalgia just ain't what it used to be." In this sermon, I examine the rose-colored glasses through which we so often examine the past, try to put that into perspective, and think about why it might be important to our ever-changing faith tradition. We’ll look at some of our past UU practices and see how our faith continues to evolve, reflecting the needs and beliefs of today’s world.

UPCOMING WORSHIP SERVICES

November 03 | "Healing with Community, Belonging, and Love" — In-person & Zoom

Building on our discussions on deep listening, it is time to decide. Today we will explore repair and crisis contemplation. We live in a time of many crises. With integrity, wholeness, and love, we can be a village that responds communally with belonging, resistance, and resilience. In love and lament, we can decide.

  • Rev. Kathryn Adams, Minister
  • Nancy Holland, Worship Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician

November 10 | "Duty to the Past, Duty to the Future" — In-person & Zoom

As the results of the recent election are digested, the nation pauses to remember the service and sacrifice of people who served in the Armed Forces, and to also be mindful of what we owe to those who will inherit this country, this world from us. What is the unfinished business of our time?

  • Rev. Paul Boothby, Guest Speaker
  • Kim Agee, Worship Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician

PARKING LOT PAVING NOTES

We have our contractor scheduled to pave our parking lot next week Monday, October 28th, subject to weather or other circumstances beyond our control. The contractor who will be striping the parking lot is not the same contractor who does the paving, and we do not know yet how soon they will be here after the paving, but hopefully it will also be next week.

Here are a couple of notes for consideration. One of the obvious notes is that we will lose the use of the parking lot the day of installation. After the paving is complete and all of the contractor’s equipment has been removed, it will be fine to walk on the new asphalt. We would like to keep traffic off for an additional 2 days to minimize possible marking by traffic. I do want to note that asphalt, as it cures over a matter of days or weeks, is much more susceptible to scuff marks by automobile tires, and particularly so when the driver turns the steering wheel if the car is not moving. Please make sure your car is rolling, even if it’s very slowly, as you turn the steering wheel while backing or driving in or out of parking places.

I will note that a US “standard” parking space is 8’6” x 18', which I believe may feel narrow to members who have been used to pulling into an unmarked lot and just keeping a "comfortable” space between cars. A US “large” parking space is 20’ x 9’. I would like to favor the 9’ space width by the 18’ depth. While recognizing some cars may extend past that depth, I would like to maintain the drive lane as wide as possible, which will make it easier turning into or coming out of spaces. I will bring some orange cones on Sunday so any members curious of the size of these spaces can see and try parking in them in advance in order to determine what may be an optimal size. The final size of parking spaces will be determined by a combination of what size we feel is comfortable and also the distance and number of spaces we can get within that distance.

Please continue to watch your emails for updates on construction progress or restrictions, as important updates will be sent out to all of our members in an email from Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River.
