Summer Reading Discussion on July 19,
Led by Amy Warner
|
|
What have you been reading this summer? With the cancellation of so many other summer plans, I would imagine that folks are reading more than usual.
For the Sunday discussion on July 19, I'm asking participants to share a 2-3 minute introduction to the best book - fiction or nonfiction - that they've read this summer.
1) Give the title, author, and a short summary.
2) Tell why you like it and/or give a recommendation.
Hold up the book if you have a copy of it! I'll keep a list, which I'll then submit to the newsletter for inclusion.
I'm looking forward to hearing about what everybody's
been reading.

From Kent County Social Action Committee For Racial Justice
|
|
This action alert is part of an ongoing effort to address racial justice in Kent County. If we can march and pray and sing and light candles, then we need to also take action to make those moments result in meaningful change.
What are we asking you to do? We need you to write the County Commissioners, the Chestertown Mayor and Council and the Rock Hall Mayor and Council. We need you to call into their meetings.
We need you to ask them what they plan to do about the policing reforms that they have been presented with. We need you to let them know that there is a huge gulf in the perception of the police departments and that of the community when it comes to trust and positive interactions.
The Social Action Committee For Racial Justice (SACRJ) policing reforms are all designed to build public confidence and ensure all communities are safe.
- The training component is the Crisis Intervention Training. Every county on the shore has officers that have taken this training but only one officer in Kent County has ever attended. This training is vital to understanding how to de-escalate situations of all kinds- domestic violence, mental health crises, etc.
- The community liaison and bike patrols reforms are all about building trusting relationships between the police and the community.
- The duty to intervene, reporting requirements, and the review board are about making sure the police are accountable to the community they serve and protect.
- The purpose of diverting funding from police to community-based programs is to commit to proven crime-reduction activities. The police respond to crime, they don't prevent it.

Homebound Recyclers Stay Strong, Boost Revenues for Old Cardboard
|
|
The suffering endured on the Eastern Shore due to the Covid-19 pandemic has included economic pain. But, as many businesses closed or made irksome changes, one enterprise gave signs of health – residential recycling.
From Betterton in the north down to Caroline County, Shore residents kept up their environmentally-helpful habits and gave a boost to private and governmental recycling programs.
The major uptick came in collections of cardboard, up by 50 percent in May versus the prior May, reported the Mid-Shore Regional Recycling Program, which operates 38 drop-off locations in Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, and Caroline counties.
Infinity Recycling Inc., which collects recycling in Chestertown and three other Shore towns, also enjoyed the increase. Ford Schumann, Director, said the higher volume reflected the large growth in consumers purchasing “everything” online and having it delivered in cardboard boxes.

Check in Every First Wednesday for Support and Feedback on Our Individual Efforts to Make a Difference
|
|
During my sermon on Sunday, June 21, I encouraged each congregant to make one specific commitment to support ending racism. As I explained, I will host a Zoom call on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 pm, where we will be able check in with one another on our progress. The call will be brief, and will focus on encouragement and learning.
