This Sunday's Worship Service: "Touched by Suicide"

Rev. Florence Caplow

10:15 am / Sanctuary

In America, there is one death by suicide every 12 minutes, and every year there are nearly a quarter of a million people who lose a loved one to suicide. Through story and music we will acknowledge this painful reality, with compassion and care. Youth from 6th grade through high school are invited to attend this service. There will also be an opportunity to share personal stories after the service, led by Jim Hannum and Marilyn Ryan.
Special Film Screening: "Growing Up Trans"
The Welcoming Congregation Committee invites you to join us on Sunday, January 27 at 2:00 pm in Fellowship Hall for a special showing of the documentary Growing Up Trans . Initially produced by Frontline, this film discusses the joys and challenges of raising a transgender child and the choices now available to transgender kids and their families. There will be a discussion after the film, as well as information regarding local resources and support groups. All are welcome, so bring your friends and family!

A message from the Accessibility and Membership Committees…
Yes, we’re “rolling out” our new name badge kiosk – both literally and figuratively.
Thanks to the handiwork of Herb Heistand, and with the able assistance of Tom McDermott, a new name badge kiosk will soon appear in the foyer.
The Accessibility and the Membership Committees have heard your concerns about the safety issue of storing our name badges on the stair where there’s danger of someone losing their balance and taking a tumble. As these committees began searching for remedy to this potential danger, they soon realized that there was no free wall space available so a free-standing portable kiosk was designed and built utilizing and repurposing some of the remaining walnut from the tree that was removed from the church grounds.
The Accessibility and the Membership Committees hope you enjoy your new kiosk and that you appreciate the research and effort that went into creating it for your convenience and safety.
You are invited! Yes, YOU!
What? Mindfulness meditation practice
When? Sundays at 9:00 am
Where? YRUU classroom
Sometimes we get caught up thinking about the past or the future, and miss out on the present. All those interested in spending some time in the present moment are welcome at the mindfulness practice.
This invitation is especially for anyone who hasn't come before, or who hasn’t come recently. No meditation experience is needed, because we listen to a guided meditation (except for the 3rd Sunday, which is unguided).
The door is always left slightly open during the practice. The hope is that anyone arriving late, no matter what time it is, can feel welcome to quietly enter and benefit from the remainder of the practice.
Practicing mindfulness with a group of people deepens the experience for everyone. Please consider checking it out!
UUCUC Shared Offering. Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive half of our weekly Sunday plate collections, designated checks written to UUCUC with organization's name written in the memo line, cash envelopes designated for "Shared Offering" within the specified month and on-line donations through our give webpage .

Our Shared Offering for January is NAACP
Founded in 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the largest and most recognized civil rights organization in the United States. NAACP works to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.

The Champaign County Branch of NAACP provides programs and services to promote and enhance civil and equal rights of all citizens, promotes political empowerment and the enactment and enforcement of civil rights laws, and promotes educational excellence, economic development, and outreach. One NAACP program, the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO), is a yearlong achievement program to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.
