  Beloved Community/Radical Hospitality
Rev. Florence Caplow and Deanna Hence

Shelter in the Storm
Rev. Florence Caplow

As the elections loom and as great storms, literal and figurative, are forecast daily, we are all just trying our best to live our lives with a little grace and joy and humor. In difficult times, how can we strengthen our support for each other and our neighbors? How can we provide refuge and sanctuary for one another? What lessons can be learned from real storms and their aftermath? Let's take a look.
Soul Matters
October "Sanctuary"
We are All Longing to Go Home

“We are all longing to go home to some place we have never been – a place half-remembered and half-envisioned we can only catch glimpses of from time to time. Community. Somewhere, there are people to whom we can speak with passion without having the words catch in our throats. Somewhere a circle of hands will open to receive us, eyes will light up as we enter, voices will celebrate with us whenever we come into our own power. Community means strength that joins our strength to do the work that needs to be done. Arms to hold us when we falter. A circle of healing. A circle of friends. Someplace where we can be free.”

May our time together be another step on our journey home.

Death with Dignity Group is hosting "Healthcare and the Art of Dying with Dignity" on Saturday, October 27, from 10am - 11:30am in Fellowship Hall.

As we contemplate how we will face end-of-life issues for ourselves and our family members, it is important to know how to make ones wishes known, and be sure they are carried out. Three physicians will discuss issues related to healthcare at the end of life, followed by a Q and A period.

Topics include: How can you make a strong ally of your physician? How can you increase the likelihood that your wishes will be carried out when you are nearing the end of life? Are written documents enough? How can you talk to your family to make sure they will be comfortable supporting your wishes? The three speakers for this workshop are: Dr. Michael Aref, palliative care physician, Carle; Dr. Claire Barker, geriatrics physician (retired from Carle); Dr. Joyce Beitel, family practice physician (retired from Carle).

There will be information tables about end of life issues, Hospice, and physician aid-in-dying legislation proposed for Illinois. Light refreshments will be served.

On Wednesday, October 31, we will celebrate Samhain (pronounced sow(ou)-in) in Fellowship Hall at 6:30 pm.

Earth religions celebrate Samhain to honor the beloved dead at a time of transformation. As we celebrate Samhain this year we will join together to raise energy to help transform our country at this critical time. Feel free to bring with you a photo or other object to honor someone who has died and whose memory will help you raise energy and commit to acting to create needed change. This ritual will be led by Virginia Brubaker and Gail Schiesser; each has been a working witch for decades.
Just a reminder that the Interim Religious Education Start-up workshop scheduled for this Friday evening, October 19th and Saturday, October 20th has been cancelled. There are new opportunities being planned at this very moment! Stay-tune and watch for new opportunities! If you have any questions, please email Michele Grove at RE-director@uucuc.org or call her at the church office.
Our Monthly Book & Magazine Exchange is Sunday! Bring in your books and magazines for exchange in Fellowship Hall after our service on Sunday, October 21. Books and magazines can be for children and adults. You can take home books or magazines without donating any and vice versa.
Your office staff is ridding of electronics that are no longer needed. Before we donate to Salt & Light, we wanted to give the opportunity to you for any items that you may need. Stop by the table at the east end of Fellowship Hall after Service on Sunday, October 21. This is a onetime deal, please take with you on Sunday. We will not hold items. Thank You!
YRUU is doing a coat-drive for the Cunningham Township. They serve about 500 extremely low-income Residents of Urbana who are homeless or just lack the resources for winter gear. Please donate your new or gently used coats, scarves, hats, mittens, gloves, sweaters, warm socks, or sweatshirts, etc.

You can drop-off your donation in the YRUU room on Sundays 10/21 or 10/28!
Adult Religious Education. Do you have a great idea for an adult religious education experience? Do you have the ability to facilitate or lead a class for adults? The opportunity for you to share you experience is right around the corner. All winter learning opportunities will be coordinated into one book for easy reference. We hope you will share your ideas and talent with this program. If you wish to discuss this further, reach out to Michele for conversation. Soon, she will have a template for designing your class.  The deadline for submissions is November 10, 2018.

Dear UUCUC Members and Friends,

We are so excited for the upcoming Installation and Celebration of Shared Ministry with our minister, Rev. Florence Caplow. In order for this event to be as special as it can be, and in the spirit of shared ministry, we will need many people to offer their talents and time. For instance, if you'd like to provide a dessert and be an usher, we welcome that!!

Rest assured that as the date gets closer, we will provide additional details to everyone who has volunteered.

A special note, to the individuals on the Installation/Celebration planning team, please sign up here to volunteer your time. We will not assume your help on the day of, unless you sign up here.

Thank you, in advance, for all of your help to make this a very special day!

For the month of October, we are supporting Feeding Our Kids. Feeding Our Kids is a local 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides nutritious food to food-insecure kids in Champaign County on weekends and school breaks. Two Moms started this grass roots group in 2013 when they became concerned that elementary school students were going home hungry over the weekend and trying to find ways to feed themselves and their siblings. From initially providing food to a few students at two schools, Feeding Our Kids has grown to serve over two dozen schools throughout Champaign County. Their goals are to spread community awareness of hunger and assist every Champaign County school in need. With 1 in every 5 children in need, hunger touches all of us, whether those struggling are our neighbors, school friends, or work colleagues.

We believe that all kids are full of the potential to do great things. We do not believe that hunger should prevent them from achieving that greatness. With the help of the community we are able to insure that these kids are able to have something to eat each weekend.

For information on volunteering or to donate please go to www.feedingourkids.org . Checks made payable to “Feeding Our Kids” can be mailed to PO Box 7422, Champ aign, IL 61826.
Thank you to the UU Walkers pictured, and to the donors who supported them! On walk day we had raised a total of $2,582 to fight hunger and poverty in C-U and abroad, and to help victims of the tsunami in Indonesia. Collection day is not until October 29, so the final total will be higher. In fact we already have an additional $95 to add to that. We live in a caring and generous community! It is so easy to not see the hunger and poverty in our midst, unless one is living it every day. Thank you so much for not turning away!!
