UPCOMING SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICES
10:15 AM in Sanctuary
Sunday, May 20, 2018
"Racial Justice"
Deanna Hence, Karla Peterson,
Rev. Florence Caplow and Members of RJI

We have made a strong commitment, as a congregation, to work on racial justice and dismantling the powerful forces of white supremacy, within and without. T he congregation voted to hang our Black Lives Matter banner outside our building, we will be hanging the banner, together, on this Sunday.  We will also have our annual Teacher Recognition, to thank our RE teachers for their service during the year.

"Bridging"

Every year some of our young people graduate from high school and from our YRUU program. We honor that immense transition through a special service, where we hear the voices of our youth as they stop across the bridge to young adulthood. Middle school and older youth are particularly encouraged to attend this service.
UPCOMING MEETINGS & EVENTS

Bookmark our UUCUC Events webpage for future reference.
UUCUC Mindfulness Meditation Group Join fellow UU's in a mindfulness meditation practice before worship service on Sundays ( detailed schedule ) in the YRUU room. As always, the door will be left slightly open so that late arrivals can enter quietly.
On May 20 at 2:00 pm the Racial Justice Initiative group will show the Oscar-winning movie “GET OUT”.  In this (R-rated) satirical thriller/horror spoof, writer and director Jordan Peele confronts middle class America about “nice people” racism. Discussion will be led by Joe Omo-Osagie.

Reviews:
“In a scenario described as “The Stepford Wives” meets “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), an African-American photographer, is about to meet his white girlfriend’s parents for the first time when he’s rattled to learn that she has not told them he is black.” ( nytimes.com )

“Racism doesn't always have to be virulent, it can sometimes take benevolent and malicious forms as displayed in this haunting and topical film.”  (Wesley Lovell, Cinema Sight)
Our Monthly Book & Magazine Exchange is Sunday, May 20. Bring in your books and magazines for exchange in Fellowship Hall after our service on Sunday, May 20. Books and magazines can be for children and adults. You can take home books or magazines without donating any and vice versa.

SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE NEWS
Our May Shared Offering is supporting FirstFollowers. FirstFollowers is a community-based re-entry program located in Champaign. The program provides services and guidance to those impacted by the criminal justice system. Their advocacy and outreach initiatives aim to build healthy relationships that impact communities positively.

Although it's not a religious program, Bethel AME Church's pastor, Larry Lewis, and his congregation has provided this program with a safe nurturing space that allows them to administer to the needs of the community and FirstFollowers operates a drop-in center there.

The mission at FirstFollowers is to build strong and peaceful communities. In order to accomplish this, they provide support and guidance to the formerly incarcerated, their loved ones, and the community as a whole.  First Followers offers a safe environment, peer-mentoring, assistance with employment searches, job training, advocacy for people with felony convictions, family reunification and service referrals.

For more information about FirstFollowers, visit their website and like their Facebook page.

Shared Offering Note: All designated checks and half of the Sunday plate offerings in May will be sent directly to FirstFollowers. Thank you in advance for your generous support.
