10:15 AM in Sanctuary
Sunday, May 27, 2018
Julian Barbieri, Isabella Howard, Mariah Laugeson, Tom McDermott,
Brian Zilles & Rev. Florence Caplow

Every year some of our young people graduate from high school and from our YRUU program. We honor that immense transition through a special service, where we hear the voices of our youth as they stop across the bridge to young adulthood. Middle school and older youth are particularly encouraged to attend this service, though there will be all-ages RE crafts for younger children. The UUCUC choir will be singing, and Simon Tiffin and Isabella Howard will be offering solos.

"Flower Celebration: Sharing Our Gifts"
Rev. Florence Caplow

UU churches around the world celebrate "Flower Communion" or the "Flower Celebration" originally developed in the early 20th century by Rev. Norbert Čapek, who founded the Unitarian Church in Czechoslovakia. He wanted to unite the diverse religious traditions of his congregation by celebrating the beauty of nature. In this last service in the sanctuary before the summer begins, we will also honor all who give their time and energy to this congregation. Please bring long-stemmed flowers to share with others in this favorite multi-generational service. Childcare is provided for the youngest children, but all ages are welcome in the service.

Worship and Picnic in the Park
Rev. Florence Caplow

Join us for our annual Worship Service and Potluck at Crystal Lake Park in Urbana. The service will begin at 10:15 with the potluck to follow. The Large Pavilion is rented for the event, so the service and potluck will be held rain or shine. Bring your own lawn chair for the service. Also, bring your favorite picnic food to share – along with beverages, plates, napkins, cups and utensils for your crew. Crystal Lake Park is located north of West Park Street, west of North Broadway Avenue. We will meet at the Large Pavilion, which is located near the parking lot off of North Central Avenue. There is a volleyball net and children’s playground nearby. The choir will be singing.

Our May Shared Offering is supporting FirstFollowers. FirstFollowers is a community-based re-entry program located in Champaign. The program provides services and guidance to those impacted by the criminal justice system. Their advocacy and outreach initiatives aim to build healthy relationships that impact communities positively.

Although it's not a religious program, Bethel AME Church's pastor, Larry Lewis, and his congregation has provided this program with a safe nurturing space that allows them to administer to the needs of the community and FirstFollowers operates a drop-in center there.

The mission at FirstFollowers is to build strong and peaceful communities. In order to accomplish this, they provide support and guidance to the formerly incarcerated, their loved ones, and the community as a whole.  First Followers offers a safe environment, peer-mentoring, assistance with employment searches, job training, advocacy for people with felony convictions, family reunification and service referrals.

For more information about FirstFollowers, visit their website and like their Facebook page.

Shared Offering Note: All designated checks and half of the Sunday plate offerings in May will be sent directly to FirstFollowers. Thank you in advance for your generous support.
