“Each Breath is Borrowed Air”
Janet Revell Barrett, Sam Beshers, and the Worship Committee

The pace of our contemporary lives makes it difficult to slow down, inviting moments of awe and wonder into our lives. We reach toward these restorative dimensions of experience on this summer morning by contemplating the expansiveness of the air we breathe, the panoramic sweep of earth, sea, and stars, the intertwined strands and molecules of life, and the interconnected lattice of our social worlds. Inspired by a hymn of this title, Jody Hanger, Virginia Brubaker, Kiri Fagen-Ulmschneider, Sam Beshers, and Janet Revell Barrett will interpret the rich meanings of text and tune, inviting those in attendance to pause in gratitude and appreciation for the wonders of reason and science, art and nature.

"Creating Connections in a Growing Church Community"
Sherry Bohlen, Scott Godlew, Deanna Hence, Jason Rock, Priscilla Kron
Featuring reflections from Rev. Florence Caplow
Song Leaders: The CrUUners

Come learn how to be a part of an emerging new "Covenant Group" program within our church community. The Covenant Group concept planned for this Fall has been designed for all new and old members and friends of UUCUC to create connections in our growing church environment. The Covenant Groups will follow UUA's theme-based ministry called "Soul Matters".

Scott Godlew, Deanna Hence, Jason Rock and Priscilla Kron will represent the cadre of fellow congregants who will facilitate our small groups.

“Small Group Ministry is one of the great grassroots movements in Unitarian Universalism today. It is also one of the healthiest. It is helping us shape a faith that affirms real, lived human experience in all its complexity. It is helping us live out our individualism in ways that not only support but enhance our sense of community.”   Rev. William Sinkford, Past President, Unitarian Universalist Association

What’s Your Story? Everyone has had life-changing experiences. Some are funny. Others enlightening. Yours may be dark. What commonality do they share? Each is a personal tale that can’t be told by anyone else.

We plan to produce an anthology of stories written by UUCUC members and friends entitled, “A Story That Changed My Life.” Everyone’s invited to be part of this project. Use your own name. Pick a pen name. Ask for help putting your tale together. All aspects of the project will be overseen by Reverend Caplow.

Look for "Call for Submissions" cards on Sunday in Fellowship Hall. Fill one out and be part of this project! For more information, contact Gail Cohen at gailsquilt@gmail.com .

SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE NEWS
August Shared Offering is supporting Equal Justice Initiative

The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is a nonprofit organization committed to ending illegal convictions and prisoner abuse, ending placement of children in adult prisons, challenging racial and economic injustice, and protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. The EJI provides legal representation, provides research and educational materials, and produces reports and films on racial injustice. The founder and executive director is Bryan Stevenson, a distinguished lawyer, activist, writer, and teacher. Dr. Stevenson and his staff have won reversals, relief or release for over 125 wrongly condemned prisoners on death row. In April 2018, EJI opened The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration in Montgomery, Alabama to address the legacy of racial terror in this country. Dr. Stevenson has many awards that honor his work. We urge you to read his book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption and go to EJI.org to learn more about this organization.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (RE) NEWS
Michele Townsend Grove, the new Interim Director of Religious Education officially began on August 1st and is excited to be working with such a vibrant congregation. She looks forward to working with you over the next two years as the congregation discerns the role and value of religious education at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign. Religious education is not just a program for children and youth. Religious education is a core value of Unitarian Universalism that is found in every nook and cranny of this congregation's work. That means that this interim time includes you! On August 19th, Rev. Caplow and Michele will lead a worship service which explores the value of religious education in our denomination and in this congregation. At this worship service, Michele will introduce herself in more detail and tell stories about what it means to be a part of an interim religious education process.

Did you know that we are offering RE classes every Sunday over the summer?  Emily McKown, our lead teacher, is doing amazing things with our kids downstairs and outside. They have done science experiments, learned about transformation by making instant ice cream, and are currently piecing together a quilt and learning about social justice. Emily is joined every week by a volunteer helper from our congregation.

The nursery is also available every Sunday. Mary and Max Foltz are here to care for the littlest so that their adults can fully participate in worship. Children are also more than welcome to sit through the worship service if that is where they feel most comfortable.
This year's Sunday morning religious education program will begin on September 9th.  It is a place where learning and community building occur for all ages! There are many ways to be involved both as leaders, assistants and behind-the-scenes supporters. If you would like to be a part of a growing community of religious education leaders and supporters, please talk to Michele Grove, the Interim Director of Religion. You can email  re-director@uucuc.org  or call at (217) 384-8862. She would love to tell you more about the many opportunities and see if something speaks to you. Michele is currently working with staff and leaders on a new plan for the religious education programs that provides support and unique opportunities for those who are involved. Keep your eyes open for the plan to unfold and for opportunities on how you may be a part of the religious education community.
