"Why Would I Harbor You?", The Worship Committee
In this service we will continue our exploration of the roles of host and guest through the personal stories of refugees and hosts. Whether in acting to address global humanitarian crises or taking in a single person, helping refugees is an intensely personal experience of living and growing our UU values. CrUUners will be singing.

Sunday, October 1
"Less: In Praise of Slowing Down", Rev. Florence Caplow
We spend our days on the run, in thrall to our phones, our calendars, and the relentless pace of modern life. In this experiential service, we will slow down and celebrate the spiritual gifts of “less is more.” The UUCUC adult and children’s choirs will be singing.

The 4th/5th grade RE class has been drafted into Dumbledore’s Army this year. As House "Lion Flame," we will be devoting our magical skills to social action. Our first battle is tackling illiteracy and we are sponsoring a Book Drive to benefit Orphan’s Treasure Box, a local organization that sells used books to benefit vulnerable children, families and orphans. In 2015, Orphan’s Treasure Box give away just over $32,000 to local and global organizations that serve orphans and vulnerable kids in Swaziland, Uganda, Peru, Haiti, and here in the Champaign-Urbana area. To find out more about this organization and its mission go to:  http://www.orphanstreasurebox.org/mission-and-vision/. Please bring in your gently used books and put them in the designated boxes in fellowship hall or in the UUCUC branch of Hogwarts (the 4th/5th grade classroom). All types of books are welcome, fiction/nonfiction, for children or adults. We will accept donations until October 8th. Thank you for your support! From the Hogwarts Professors

This deals with the ways institutions and policies advantage some groups and have fostered and maintained segregated racialized spaces which are part of a system which, by itself, works to maintain white supremacy. We will discuss how this relates to the inequalities of Ferguson and how this process is manifested in Champaign-Urbana. The sessions will be held in Fellowship Hall beginning at 2:30 pm. There is no charge and all are invited. (Note: We encourage people to support the CROP walk on Oct 8 with a donation while attending the RJI workshop on Oct. 8.)
