PEN PALS HAVE BEEN REVEALED!

Pen Pals enjoyed lunch, conversation and new friendships after the mystery pen pal names were revealed last Sunday. We had a few missing, but of the 15 pairs who did attend had a great time. Friendships were made that will last a lifetime.
Do you like the Harry Potter books? Enjoy folktales? Enjoy crafts? Interested in social justice with our youth?

Then check out the RE table and sign up to volunteer teaching a class, assisting in summer RE classes or helping out with our UU summer camp. Learn about our principles like you have never before. There is something for everyone. We would love to have you work with us.

Please join us to learn more about the history and philosophy of the Unitarian Universalist Church and to learn about the governance of UUCUC, activities and opportunities available to our church community, religious education offerings for adults and for children, and about the role you'll be asked to play as a steward of our church.

At the completion of this class, you'll be invited to become a member.

Participating in and joining the church at the end of this class will qualify you to become a "voting member" so that you can vote on the selection of our new "Settled Minister".

Light lunch provided. Child care available with advance arrangement.

Service AUUCtion
CrUUise Around the World!

Don't forget to get your tickets to this year's Service AUUction being held on  April 15th ! Tickets are being sold at the Hub table after each church service and are $10/person, $30/family and include drinks, appetizers, dinner, and dessert.  Children are welcome; there will be food and activities for them as well. The auction itself will be a blast, and will give you the opportunity to bid on all kinds of fun and useful things.

This week we're featuring one of the items you'll be able to bid on: a brewery tour followed by a beer and bread tasting, offered by Caroline and Matt Riggs (beer) and Ursula Reuter-Carlson (bread), a tour-de-force of yeasty goodness!  Ten lucky buyers will enjoy a private tour of the Riggs Beer Company with the Brewmaster followed by a sampling of Riggs' Beers and Ursula's breads in the Beergarden.  This was a very popular item in last year's auction and we're pleased to be able to offer it again.

We need many volunteers to make this evening work, and many donations for the attendees to bid on. You can volunteer and submit donations by filling out the forms available from the Hub table, by emailing auction@uucuc.org, or by visiting www.uucuc.org/auction. Come and be part of the fun!
JOYS AND SORROWS

Jody Hanger - We are all heavy with sadness. Our family friends, Heather and Ryan Miller, lost their only child, Luke, last Saturday night after complications from emergency surgery. Luke was a long time classmate and teammate of our son, Ben.

Sally Babbitt - My son-in-law, Larry Levy, is doing well after open heart surgery at Northwestern Hospital and will be going home on Thursday 3/16/17 (hopefully).

PRE-CANDIDATING WEEKENDS ARE COMPLETE

We are able to cross another major hurdle off our task timeline in Fellowship Hall. Be sure to check it out - it’s posted above the water fountain, follow our progress and see what’s next. In the meantime, here is the scoop:

On Feb. 9th, we reported that we were anticipating three pre-candidate weekends. Those are now complete. The three ministers we selected traveled here on different weekends to meet and interview with the search committee and preach at a neutral pulpit. From Friday evening to late Sunday afternoon, there was time for informal visiting, shared meals, formal interview questions, tours of the church and of the community. We got to know each of them extremely well and were quite impressed with the warmth and talent they could bring to our church family. We have rank ordered our pre-candidates which we now share with the UUA Transitions Office. Each pre-candidate also rank orders their choice of placement, which the Transitions Office compares to ours.

Ultimately, one candidate will be chosen, and invited for the (Saturday through Sunday) week of April 29 to May 7. During that week, our candidate will give two sermons and meet as many church members as possible in various meetings and gatherings. Those events and dates will be scheduled and publicized in April. On May 7, our congregation will vote on whether to call the candidate as our minister. Remember that you must be a member of the church to vote and there is a Pathway to Membership Class on April 2, after which attendees will be invited to officially join the church and become a voting member.

SOCIAL ACTION & RACIAL JUSTICE NEWS
NOTES FROM RJI (RACIAL JUSTICE INITIATIVE)
You too can be involved – a little or a lot – in the 2017-2018 two-year initiative on Racial Justice. Following are some things you can do:

  • Sign on to Unitarian Universalist Advocacy Network of Illinois (UUANI) to receive direct messages regarding legislative action. The link is http://uu-advocacy-illinois.org. Or check out their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/UUANI. Taking action is often as simple as signing your name on petitions and adding your zip code….literally takes only minutes! Action relates to both Federal and Illinois issues.
  • Stand up for – or step in to help – someone who is being treated with disrespect.   Or report inappropriate treatment to business managers.
  • Write Letters-to-the-Editor upon learning of some unjust or inappropriate action against person(s) of color or minority groups.
  • Become involved with such activities as Court Watch (contact courtwatch217@gmail.com), or work with college-in-prison programs (contact info@educationjustice.net).
  • Continue to provide “Books to Prisoners”. Books left over from Book Exchange Sunday are currently given to this program.
We can make a difference!!
