Adult Religious Exploration Discussion Group - held Sundays at 10am downstairs in the common room at UUFF!
This Sunday, 06/26/2022: Said one well-known person, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Another is quoted as saying “When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.” Who are these authors?
Join us as we view quotes from a variety of sources - philosophers, artists, inventors, and authors. What was the intention of their words? Is there positive guidance for us in these messages? Join us.
This is the last ARE Discussion Group of the summer. We will NOT MEET during the months of July and August. SUMMER BREAK! We'll return to 10am Discussions in September.

Good news, everyone: The UUFF Nursery will begin offering childcare on Sunday, July 10th! During the months of July-August, childcare will be available during the 11am service. And in September, when our 10am Religious Exploration hour for Adults, Youth, and Children comes back into session after the "summer break," the hours will extend to 9:45am-12:15pm.
We are very fortunate to have Alex Emmons (see pic of Alex in action!) coming onboard as UUFF's Nursery Coordinator and Rowan Shelby joining the staff as a Nursery Assistant! We also plan to hire at least one additional assistant to ensure coverage. I asked Alex to write up a little self-intro so that y'all could find out a bit more about her ahead of the official Nursery opening. Please check out her "note to UUFF" below:
"My name is Alex Emmons (she/her/hers), and I am thrilled to be joining the UUFF staff as your Nursery Coordinator! I cannot wait to meet everyone at the opening in July. In the meantime, I wanted to go ahead and tell you a little about myself.
I am a longtime resident of Fayetteville and a returning student at the University of Arkansas (Psychology major, Human Development minor). I have worked in childcare and child education for the past few years, which motivated me to pursue my educational goals and to one day become a clinical child psychologist/examiner.
Until recently, I worked at an after-school childcare center in Bentonville, where I looked after the safety and well-being of the wonderful, diverse students in my group. Prior to that, I worked at a K-12 social-emotional learning (SEL) startup where I screened for gaps in education and taught group classes on life skills topics such as Confidence, Resilience, and Effective Communication. This past year, I have worked alongside the nonprofit "Sleep in Heavenly Peace" - Bentonville to help raise awareness for their cause and build beds for the children of Northwest Arkansas.
Outside the professional realm, I am a proud auntie to my two beloved nephews, Magnus and Thorston (you may have seen them around!). I am also a happy cat mamma, an unapologetic plant hoarder, and an advocate for lifelong learning. I cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to getting to know all of you and the whole UUFF community. I believe that children are the key to positive future changes in the world, and it fills my heart to have the opportunity and means to help our little ones feel safe and confident enough to find and follow their individual strengths and passions.
Thank you all for allowing me to join the staff of your wonderful, progressive fellowship, and to help the community grow by offering a safe, respectful, fun playing and learning environment to the children of UUFF!" ~ Alexandra ("Alex") Emmons

The goal of the "Connections" Team (formally Membership) is to connect guests and members to the life of the Fellowship, and we are looking for UUFF members who would enjoy being a part of this important group.
We are also looking for volunteers willing to greet before and after Sunday Services to help make connections with visitors, friends, and members.
Please contact Charlotte Taylor (cathog58@gmail.com) if you are interested in either of these activities.

Splash Into Reading:
Inter-generational Summer Book Club!
The chosen book for discussion is "Wishtree," by Katherine Applegate! NOTE: The picture shows the children's version of the book. There is also an adult version available with the same content portrayed in a slightly different format. Reading either version will equip the reader for participation in the discussions.
Feel free to pick up a copy (paper or electronic) at the library, your favorite bookstore, or online.
Thanks to all who joined the first meeting yesterday at Wilson Park. Our next meeting will be 6/28, 5pm, at George Park in Springdale. We will talk about chapters 13-24 of "Wishtree" and then cool off in the splash pad. Come join us!

Justice Spotlight - Week of June 22, 2022
|
|
Issue: Racial equality and justice. Juneteenth (June 19th) is a federal holiday established to officially celebrate each year the anniversary of the first federal enforcement in the South of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon led a unit of the Union Army to Galveston, Texas, to enforce at gunpoint the freeing of the African Americans still enslaved there. It must have been quite confrontational, but the success of the mission that day served as a turning point, and it has since been celebrated as a symbol of the actual enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation.
This past Sunday at UUFF, Fayetteville City Council member and activist, D’Andre Jones, delivered a wonderful message on the topic of Juneteenth, reminding us that while Juneteenth is a celebration, but it’s not JUST a celebration; it is a call for a continuation of the efforts for improved racial equity, justice and empowerment. The work continues, and we cannot rest on our laurels by any means. We UU’s live by principles, and it is deep within our principles that we should always work toward a better world for all human beings. Let it be so.
The next Justice Team meeting will be on Thursday, July 7th, beginning at 7pm. You can attend in person (at Dina Nash’s house - dessert will be served) or remotely by Zoom. Details (Dina's address and the zoom link) will be included in the weekly email just before the meeting date.
Dina Nash, Justice Team Lead, 501-554-2200
