Sunscreens and Sunburns

Living in the sunny desert it is essential to wear a daily sunscreen of at least 15 SPF which can be tricky as most of the sunscreens contain ingredients that are known to cause health issues.  A trusted source with lists of the safe sunscreens is the Environmental Working Group's website, specifically their Skin Deep page. At ilumina, we carry a fantastic all natural sunscreen by Leaf People. Their SPF 28 has a light lavender scent and can be used for the face and body without feeling heavy and greasy. The ingredients are safe for the entire family to use making it the perfect sunscreen to enhance the skin's radiance with pure, raw botanicals and boost your skin care routine.

If you happen to forget your sunscreen and get sunburn Chinese medicine has helpful remedies to help your skin heal. Water is essential and it is recommended to drink 8 ounces with electrolytes every hour. My favorite is Trace Mineral Electrolyte Stamina Tablets. A mixture of pineapple and black cherry juice is also helpful. Topically, you can apply a layer of plain yogurt or fresh aloe vera. It is also best to avoid oily, greasy, spicy and barbecued foods as well as alcohol and coffee. Beneficial foods are watermelon, cantaloupe, pears and apples.

Meditation Classes Starting Soon
Dana Price will be offering Buddhist based meditation classes on Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. staring September 17th.  The class will start with a brief introduction followed by a meditation practice.

After meditation Dana will guide participants through a  Feeding Your Demons session. Feeding Your Demons is a gentle and profound technique developed by Lama Tsultrim Allione used to clear blockages in our lives which are holding us back.

Dana became a certified facilitator over the summer and is on the path to becoming an Authorized Teacher for Lama Tsultrim. The recommended donation is $5 and is used to cover expenses. No one will be turned away for lack of funds and all are welcome. You do not need to be a Buddhist to attend. All can benefit from learning ways to calm the mind.
Coconut Oil as Sunscreen?

We've all heard about the benefits of adding coconut oil to not only our diet, but also as a moisurizer for the skin. But can coconut oil really provide protection against the damaging UV rays of the sun, especially here in the Valley?

When taken internally, coconut oil, which is made up of medium-chain fatty acids, is easily digested, absorbed, and can provide a quick source of energy for the body. This is important for adults and children with malabsportion disorders such as IBS or Crohn's disease. Coconut oil also has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties which help our immune system by attacking some viruses and bacteria in the body.

Applied externally, coconut oil seems to help many skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis; it can help speed up the healing of cuts and burns. It's even useful in treating fungal infections like ringworm and athlete's foot. It's long shelf life and pleasant smell make for a great natural mousturizer for most skin types. But does it contain enough Sun Protection Factor to prevent sunburn? Recent studies have shown that, yes, coconut oil by itself does provide about SPF 7 or 8 and blocks about 20% of UV rays. Is this enough? It really depends on your skin type, and other factors such as diet and lifestyle, how long you're out in the sun, etc.

I love to use coconut oil on my skin and often recommend it to my clients as a medium for self care massage. But being a fair-skinned redhead, I try to add a little more SPF when I'm out in the sun for prolonged periods. For more information on safe, natural sunscreen products visit these sources:
