2020 brings 65 years of service
This year, 2020, our United Way Galveston County Mainland is celebrating 65 years of meeting the needs of our community! Please join us in our celebration because truly, whether you give or receive services, our United Way is your United Way. United Way Galveston County Mainland is incredibly honored to be a part of this caring community! Our county has many challenges ahead but ultimately through working together we will continue to improve and thrive as a community.

We believe it is important to keep the community abreast of where we are financially, as finances significantly affect our ability to support programs throughout our community that change lives for good. Our recent fund raising campaigns have been more of a challenge and the bottom line is raising less equates to less funding for local programs and services.

As we have talked with leadership from throughout the county, we have concluded that there is no single or simple answer. The Partner Agencies we fund, other local non-profits, churches and schools are facing these same challenges. Raising funds, even in a growing economy is a challenge for us all. History shows that in a thriving economy, giving is typically down. While there are many possible explanations for this, perhaps the most compelling is that when we personally prosper, we do not grasp the struggle that some in our community face.

As we travel through 2020 together, please remember that no matter how good it gets or how bad it may seem, we all have room to grow, to give, to volunteer and to be better team players. At 65, United Way Galveston County Mainland is energized to be a part of making our community the best that it can be. We invite you, young, old or in between to LIVE UNITED with us!
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

United Way Galveston County Mainland has been hosting a full functioning VITA program for over 10 years. UWGCM is happy to move forward with another year of service for this needed program in our community.

UWGCM will be officially taking appointments for this program starting February 17, 2020 by calling the UWGCM office at 409.948.4211. We are looking forward to another successful year of the VITA program at UWGCM.

Salvation Army of Galveston County
The Salvation Army is one of UWGCM's partner agencies.

Through individual donations, UWGCM is able to assist in funding two programs at Salvation Army, The Center of Hope and The Emergency Financial Assistance Program.

Residents of The Center of Hope and sign up for case management. Case managers evaluate the individual and help them recognize and overcome obstacles to stability. The Center of Hope offers life-skills training, assistance with job search and education and has a variety of residential and educational programs designed to encourage progress toward self-sufficiency.

The goal of the emergency financial assistance program is to stabilize individuals and family households during temporary financial hardships. This may be done with short-term rental or mortgage assistance, utility assistance, medical, school expenses or recovery assistance after a personal disaster such as a house fire and flooding. Longer-term assistance consists of provision of information, referrals, and relevant counseling (family budgeting) to prevent recurrence.
