Cal Walker

Relationship Liaison

After having served in a volunteer role chairing the United Way’s Annual/Community Campaign several years ago, I’m very excited to be part of the team in a part-time staff role. While this organization has always been critical to helping address significant and continuing community needs, it is becoming even more nimble, more responsive and, importantly, more necessary and relevant. Like any community, we face myriad challenges, but what continues to inspire me is the focus on solutions - making a positive difference in the lives of others when we can, where we can and while we can.

One area of urgent need is helping individuals throughout our community who are working, but only earning just above of the income threshold that makes them eligible for various forms of assistance. Imagine having to choose between keeping heat in the home or having enough food on the table, whether to keep the necessary childcare so you can go to work or pay to get the car fixed. This is literally the day-to-day experience of many “ALICE” households (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed). Think about this - might some of these individuals and/or families be your neighbor, co-worker, friend or relative?

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., along with many others, often reminded us that whatever affects one directly, affects all of us indirectly! We are all part of humankind and ALL of us, individually, and collectively, can make a positive difference.

Time, Talent and Treasure: “We give of ourselves when we truly give.” (from Kahlil Gibran).
