Oolong Gallery presents the luminous minimalism of Udo Nöger and is pleased to show new work from his body of monochrome paintings based on a career spanning forty years around the globe. Known for his highly minimalistic compositions, Nöger's sculptural paintings and works on paper emanate a subtle yet powerful visual reaction that transforms with changing light, offering an immersive experience for viewers.
Born in Enger, Germany, in 1961, Nöger began with expressive figurative paintings before shifting his focus to the interplay of light and space in the mid-1990s. His work evolved from the use of archaic symbols and iconography—sparked by his travels, including a formative visit to Easter Island—towards a more abstract language. Over time, his use of dark, earthy tones gradually gave way to a near-absence of color, creating works that invite viewers to consider not just what is seen, but also the light itself.
Nöger's innovative technique involves three layers of canvas set apart to create a depth that allows light to seemingly emanate from within the paintings. Using mineral oil to enhance translucency, the artist has developed a method to capture, reflect, and transform light, making it a central medium in his work. The result is a body of work that is dynamic and atmospheric, with colors shifting depending on the light and time of day.
The exhibition will showcase seven of Nöger's signature works, which are both delicate and architectural, characterized by their serene palette of whites, grays, and occasional hints of blue, purple, or green, depending on the light.
Udo Nöger lives and works in Fallbrook and Rancho Santa Fe, CA following decades in NY and Miami. His work is featured in prestigious collections worldwide, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver; and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. His work has been exhibited extensively in museums and galleries across Europe, the U.S., and beyond.
