March 2021 Canadian Newsletter
Greetings!
Today we welcome March, or berezen’, the first spring month (for some) is named after the birch trees (берези) which start showing their leaves and are often tapped for sap in Ukraine.

Last week it was wonderful to see a huge burst of materials celebrating 150 years since the birth of poet Lesia Ukrainka. Next week we will mark the birth of poet and artist Taras Shevchenko. Although these celebrations may not be taking place in the usual ways, I think they remind us of the richness of the Ukrainian literary tradition and its relevance in the modern world.

Easter is just a few weeks away, and there are many online workshops taking place to share and celebrate our rich cultural, religious, and artistic traditions. Our team is planning an engaging National Pysanka Campaign, to be launched in the coming weeks.

I hope that you and your family are well and looking at your options to register for a vaccine in your province as soon as possible. UCC continues to provide Covid-19 resources for the community and we appreciate your participation in our recent survey.

DONOR'S CORNER
Taking Care of the future, Legacy/Planned Giving

I am very passionate about Legacy/Planned Giving. For many of us, this is the best way to make a significant charitable contribution that was not possible during our lifetime. When I decided to leave some money in my will, I experienced the amazing feeling of making a truly impactful gift and leaving something behind to the organization I am passionate about.

I am sure this is how our recent estate donors, Amelia "Emily" Johnston and Mykola & Maria Mys, felt when they decided to leave their legacy for the benefit of their community and charities they supported throughout their lives.

Emily had a heart full of love and generosity, and she appreciated the work of the UCC National, which she supported for over 11 years. She believed that only a strong Ukrainian Canadian organization could lead our community into a bright future. She was always grateful that her parents could feel "at home away from home" because of the strong Ukrainian Canadian Community.

Mykola and Maria always felt the importance of supporting their community, including the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, which they supported for over 14 years. When deciding which program to support, the Holodomor Education and Awareness Fund was their choice. Mykola felt that educating others about this tragedy was his duty as a survivor.
