It's September!  Kids are back in school, Football season has begun.  The weather is starting to turn (hopefully the rain will hold off for a while yet).  We hope you all have had a GREAT summer, and were able to enjoy the nice weather as  well as take a much needed break.

Fall is off to a great start here in the office, make sure you scroll down after reading this article to see what we have planned for September.  Hopefully we will see you all during that special week!

Wondering why there is a random picture of a Cabbage?  Keep reading this article to find out why CABBAGE is so great!

See you in September!

Ulcers and Vitamin U

If you develop a peptic ulcer, remember vitamin U, a vitamin discovered in the '50s by Dr. Garnett Chaney from Stanford.  It was first isolated in raw cabbage juice.  You cannot buy this vitamin and it has never been synthesized.  But if you develop a peptic ulcer, remember it.  People who consume a quart of raw (freshly juiced) cabbage juice daily have an average peptic ulcer cure time of 10 days.

So whether you take the hospital cure (Pepto Bismol and antibiotics) to cure the supposed bacterial cause of an ulcer or not, remember to juice a quart of fresh cabbage and drink it daily.  It is rotten tasting stuff, so you can dilute it with apple or another benign juice. In addition, the supplements Gastrex and Okra Pepsin E3 from Standard Process will go a long way toward healing peptic and intestinal ulcers.

Take three to four Gastrex capsules 15 minutes before meals and at bedtime for up to 60 days to help healing.  Take two Okra Pepsin E3 capsules after all meals for 6 to 12 months.  These promote healing, protect from irritating foods, clear away debris and toxins, and even help strip away excess stale mucous from the intestinal tract.

The cause of Ulcers

The 'newest cause' of ulcers is now the bacterial connection, hence the Pepto Bismol antibiotic therapy to kill pylori bacteria present in the stomach.  However, this bacteria can be found in people without stomach irritation or ulcers, and is often not found in those with ulcers.  Generally the real cause of ulcers is the decades-long assault of noxious foods and food combinations in the presence of insufficient stomach enzymes and acids.

Without adequate stomach acids, food in the stomach cannot be digested properly.  Without it reaching a sufficiently acid pH, it will not leave the stomach.  Instead it will rot and ferment, causing most indigestion, heartburn, reflux, and if left untreated, millions of cases of ulcers.  So remarkably many, if not most, people with stomach ulcers need acid therapy once their ulcer is cleared up.  Without this therapy, the correct diet with better food combining, and common sense, ulcers will return over and over.

If you suffer from an ulcer, remember vitamin U and the therapies outlined here.  If you have heartburn and fear an impending ulcer, use the Zypan Test to determine if you need acid therapy.  If you do, nothing short of this treatment will ever cure ulcers and chronic indigestion.  To find out more about the Zypan Test, continue reading.

Low Stomach Acid and the Zypan Test
The problem of low stomach acid is so common it should be considered an epidemic.  Since so much money can be made treating symptoms of low stomach acid with antacids, the problem persists and is getting much worse.  For some, the problem is simply a manifestation of getting old.  As we age, years of dietary abuse weaken the digestive tract.  It becomes less effective and produces less acids and enzymes.  Ironically, as the stomach produces less acids, the pancreas produces less digestive enzymes. This contributes to a one-two punch that affects not only the elderly, but people of all ages, including children.

The truth is that you cannot eat "nothing but junk" day in and day out and expect your stomach to treat you well.  And you cannot eat like this, end up feeling lousy, and then pop antacids without paying the consequences down the line.  This deacidification of the stomach eventually leads to malabsorption syndrome, incomplete or undigested foods in the gut, and lack of nutrients in the system.  These conditions lead to the eventual degradation of all the glands and organs.  Which in turn results in disease and the downward spiral of poorer and poorer health.

Signs of Low Stomach Acid

The most common signs of hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid) are bloating, belching, burning after meals, feeling too full, finding food still in you stomach hours after eating, poor and thin fingernails, poor hair quality, falling hair, broken capillaries and more.  If you insist on using antacids to treat low stomach acid, you can end up with poor mineral absorption, vitamin deficiencies (especially B12), parasites, candidiasis, poor muscle tone from inability to digest protein, and a host of other possibilities as the condition worsens.  Some of these can include asthma, adrenal failure and exhaustion, hives, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid problems.

Testing for low stomach acid can be invasive and expensive.  Procedures include a full exam by an internist with an instrument inserted into your stomach to measure pH (acidity), hair analysis, stool samples for undigested food, or radiotelemetry with Heidelberg capsules.  But in the end the easiest and cheapest way to test for low stomach acid is with the Zypan Test.

The Zypan Test

If your digestion is caused by low stomach acid, providing hydrochloric acid, enzymes, and the raw materials to create acids will bring prompt relief.  This is where Zypan from Standard Process comes in.  It contains betaine hydrochloride, pepsin, and pancreatic enzymes.  Start with one tablet per meal and see if you feel better or worse.  If you feel the same or slightly better go to two or three per meal and judge the response.

It is a rare instance that a burning stomach is caused by an ulcer.  If the burning or tingling occurs with Zypan, this is the sign that you may have an ulcer or a severe case of gastritis (usually caused by the ramifications of long-term antacid use).  With low stomach acid, food stays in the stomach too long and slowly ferments.  Food cannot move out of the stomach until the food mass is sufficiently acidic.  The sphincter will not allow the food to pass until this occurs.  With low stomach acid or antacid use, this can take hours.  During this time the food ferments, producing acidic gases and acids.  These irritants are what cause most burning, ulcers, and gastritis.

What to do for Ulcers

Take one to three months to treat and eliminate the inflammation or ulcer.  Eliminate wheat, milk and all wheat and milk products from your diet for 30 days.  Take three or four Gastrex capsules 15 minutes before each meal and at bedtime.  Take three Okra Pepsin E3 capsules with each meal.  If you have a bad ulcer, drink eight ounces of freshly juiced cabbage daily.  This can be combined with a little apple juice for taste.  After one to three months, most ulcers and gastritis will be resolved.

What to do for Low Stomach Acid

At the end of healing an ulcer or gastritis, you are still left with the job of treating the cause of the problem (a novel concept in the field of medicine).  So you are back to the Zypan test.  You can also test with apple cider vinegar (two tablespoons in a glass of water).  Once you find out that low stomach acid was the cause of your problem all along, treating and resolving the condition is easy.  Simply use the Zypan while you clean up your diet, get plenty of raw foods (which contain enzymes), use a good form of salt (which is necessary for the production of stomach acids and enzymes), and combine foods more sensibly.

If you discovered along the way that the elimination of wheat and/or milk provided great relief, you may need to eliminate these for a year or longer.  And when it comes to salt, I recommend the Celtic Sea Salt.

What our Patients are saying...

I had extremely low energy, I wasn't digesting foods and had a decreased appetite.  I was short tempered.  Now my energy has increased, I am able to eat three meals a day and sleeping much better.
I also have a better attitude.
