Ultra HDI Pushes PCB Manufacturing Capabilities

This year, ASC has tapped industry thought leaders for their advice about Ultra HDI technology - brought to you in our Newsletter. Their decades of experience span every market sector, from military to medical, and they are in demand as instructors and consultants. Here are just a few highlights from 2023 - with Design experts John Watson of Altium, Steph Chavez of Siemens, Dan Beeker of NXP and Eric Bogatin, University of Colorado. And the iconic Gene Weiner brings you global executive perspective on decision-making around new technology.

Their wisdom is well worth a second look! You can find complete interviews with each of them at https://asc-i.com/about-us/asc-newsletter

This is our thanks to you!

Why should I learn more about Ultra HDI technology?

It minimizes signal problems, noise, and disruptions, ensuring that devices work consistently and without interruptions. UHDI helps maintain a strong and reliable connection between different parts of electronic devices.

UHDI presents a very attractive solution to routing density and signal integrity challenges. Coupled with additive manufacturing techniques, it provides a method to create small, controlled impedance transmission lines in unconventional ways.

It is essential for the development of organic substrates for packaging chiplets. for medical applications. And it would enhance the performance of HDI boards currently in demand - to make the circuitry needed by the rapidly growing AI market and its need for faster data processing.

Why should I invest in exploring Ultra HDI?

If you want to fly, you have to step off the ledge. Using newer technology can be an energy shot for your whole team.

Newer isn’t always better for a particular project.

When you first use a new technology like UHDI, stay within the pocket for success. Designers must move with purpose in a controlled fashion, remaining adaptable despite being at the pressure point.

What are the Design Rules for Ultra HDI?

This new technology may seen daunting, but focus on the science: energy is governed by simple rules, and the electromagnetic fields always follow those rules. You can take advantage of all new advances in IC and PCB fabrication technology if you understand that energy moves in the spaces and use your PCB design to create those spaces.

No advanced math is needed, just a belief in geometry and spaces - and you will be able to face any challenge, from the most advanced network server design to high-power automotive electric inverters.

Who can partner with me on projects that could benefit from Ultra HDI?

Very few fabricators in the U.S. are equipped to make HDI or Ultra HDI circuits. It requires an understanding of the materials available for the process and their limitations. They must be familiar with and use advanced design tools such as IPC-2581 or ODB++ and create a digital twin to efficiently generate a manufacturable part. American Standard Circuits should be your first choice.

Everyone says that communication is key. What do experts say?

Overcommunicate!

Everyone on the team must participate in the process - from design to final test. We are the fabricator that can help you make it happen.
