Friends of the Farm-

Happy November and the official start of our next 10-week season of Umbel Roots CSA. We're so happy to have you! Many of our farming neighbors and other local CSA programs take a break this time of year, but we can't help ourselves... We think that California is capable of some dynamic winter crops worthy of sharing their story and delivering to you fresh each week throughout these seasons of Fall & Winter. We feel strongly that in these shorter, darker days we need to be eating equally as fresh and nutritious as the bounty we come to expect with the height of summer produce season. Let Umbel Roots CSA be your light in the winter ahead. There's too much good stuff to explore and eat, trust us!

Fall rains continue to bless the farm and invigorate our soil and the crops in the field. A big push is currently being made in our green house to support seeding of future successions of winter crops as well as a big focus put on our greens program. Currently in the field we have 11 different varieties of greens that make up our proprietary greens mix which goes to a handful of Bay Area restaurants for feature. The cooler temperatures and consistent moisture support healthy greens growth and a more robust variety mix compared to summer where we lean heavily on more resilient greens. Tatsoi, Red Frill, Red-Veined Sorrel, Golden Mustard, and Spinach are some favorites to see a recent return.

In this week's recipe we feature Sunchokes! The quintessential flavors of Autumn if you ask us. Warm, nutty, and creamy there's nothing that beats an oven-roasted Sunchoke with crisped skin. A perfectly simple Fall ingredient full of nutrition and flavor. Try our simple roasted Sunchoke & Celery Root recipe to experience the nuance of these two great veggies you may not otherwise put into your basket at the supermarket. Also enjoy the colorful Marigold bouquets in this week's box in celebration of Día de Muertos / Day of the Dead! A fun flower addition to your veggies.

Don't forget to tune into this week's edition of our CSA music playlist. Link to our Spotify playlist is attached below to join the groove...
This week we fully lean into the shoulder season of Autumn with tracks such as Edwin Star's Easin' In, The Leaves Are Falling (The Overlanders), There Is a Time (The Dillards), and Summer Is Over (Dusty Springfield). My Stove's On Fire (Robert Lester Folsom) and Detroit's own producer & guitar funk-man, Dennis Coffey with Scorpio, bring seasonal hints to this week's music as well. Heck there's even a Carole King disco record in there for you to find this week! A touch of funk, a bit of blues, a dash of soul, and a hint of bluegrass this playlist is your warm blanket to wrap you up in the cooler days. Knowing too that we lose an hour of daylight this Sunday with Daylight Savings Time (Booooo!), we couldn't help but send you off with The Dayton Sidewinder's - Slipping Into Darkness. Enjoy!

A reminder that we will be taking the week of Friday November, 26th off from regular CSA delivery due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

*We are offering a special holiday CSA offering of your choice that can be available as an add-on, Tuesday November 23rd. Perfect for your requests of veggies you'd like for your Thanksgiving cooking. Umbel Roots would be proud to have a place on your Thanksgiving table!
