Sawubona Umoja Community,

We hope you have experienced much joy, love, and relaxation during these early months of summer. We are excited about the upcoming Fall 2022 semester! As of now, we will primarily operate virtually in Fall 2022; however, we will also have some in-person celebrations and events to build community. As some of you know, we have officially moved to our temporary village space in the 1900 building in April 2022.

However, we hope to see all of our returning scholars and meet our new scholars at our upcoming in-person Scholar Orientation next month (register below). This month you can access our Laptop Lending Program Application and/or meet with an Academic Counselor. Our Nourish the Soul (grocery gift card support) will continue in August for Fall 2022.

Please note the following:

• Distribution dates will be scheduled by appointment between August 15-31. If there are any circumstances when these dates do not work, please contact Umoja directly.
• Please note that all laptops must be returned to the Umoja Office by the last day of finals on December 10, 2022. Further details will be provided directly via email.

Laptop loans will be granted on a first-come, first-serve basis. The priority deadline to submit the request is Thursday, July 28, 2022. Requests will be considered while supplies last.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Our beloved Umoja Community Therapist, Nadine Henley, has transitioned from our program and the FC campus. Therefore, the Umoja Staff team is currently working diligently to welcome a new Community Therapist for Fall 2022. We appreciate your patience and understanding at this time. 

For more information on Student Health Services' operating hours and services, please call (714) 992-7093 to make an appointment with a mental health professional. 

The Nourish the Soul Grocery Gift Card program will return in August for Fall 2022.

Please note that in order to receive active scholar benefits for the upcoming academic year, the following requirements must be fulfilled:

(1) Counseling: Meet with a Umoja Counselor once a semester.

(2) Activities: ATtend at least two program activities (workshops, events, Porch Talks) per semester.

Now is the time to meet with a Counselor!

Academic Counseling has returned! Appointments are available starting Wednesday, July 6, 2022. Please note that we are closed on Fridays until August 12th. 

Please schedule an appointment to review your educational plan and ask any questions regarding courses, transfer or academic goals, degrees or certificates, and more.

The UMOJA Student Leadership Summit is hosted to convene, train, and organize our student leaders to go forward to make great contributions to their local programs and the broader campus environment for African American students this coming academic year. The summit will provide historically and culturally grounded leadership training. Umoja student leaders will also be featured prominently in next years' Umoja events and receive ongoing training provided by Umoja throughout the year. 

This event will take place In-Person at UC Santa Barbara from August 4 - 6, 2022.

Priority deadline to submit: 2 PM Monday, July 11, 2022
