Unbelievable Legislation in Colorado!

The following excerpt from AAPLOG (American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs) summarizes the appalling legislation that is being considered by our state governing officials regarding tax payer funded abortions.

“A Birth is More Expensive than an Abortion”: Colorado Legislator Shamefully Advocates for Killing Preborn Children to Save the State Money

During a March 25 hearing for the Colorado State House Health & Human Services Committee, a Colorado legislator promoted a bill that would mandate government funding of induced abortion for women enrolled in Medicaid or the state’s Child Health Plan Plus program (ironically) on the grounds that it would save money for the state.

"A birth is more expensive than abortion,” said Colorado House Speaker Julie McCluskie (D-Dillon), one of the sponsors of SB 25-183

At this hearing, Dr. Catherine Wheeler, AAPLOG Board Member and President of our Colorado chapter, pointed out the concerning messaging of the bill’s proponents: “Seriously, the bill’s sponsors are saying that if more babies die by abortion, it will be cheaper for the state.”

In a comment to The Christian Post, Dr. Wheeler followed up on these thoughts:

"To promote induced abortion on the grounds that it’s cheaper for the government than childbirth is to demonstrate a heartbreakingly myopic attitude toward the value of Coloradans’ lives. Of course, it is cheaper in the short term for the state to kill a preborn child rather than support her and her mother through childbirth and the very vulnerable first few years of her life. But any society should recognize that caring for mothers as they raise the next generation is a worthy investment."

Citing a study published in Cureus, Dr. Wheeler noted that the majority of women who obtain abortions reported high levels of pressure to do so. “Low-income Colorado women, the majority of whom desire their babies, deserve a government that will unconditionally support their pregnancies, not push them towards termination to save money for the state.”

Dr. Tom Perille, co-founder of AAPLOG’s Colorado chapter, criticized the methodology of the impact report that concluded this bill would save Colorado money. “The analysis is so simplistic that it insults the intelligence of lawmakers who earnestly wish to understand the implications of state funding,” he told the committee. Pro-life advocates criticized the bill’s underestimation of the cost of abortion and the number of out-of-state women who might be enticed to travel to Colorado for abortions under the bill.

Dr. Michael New, professor of social sciences at the Catholic University of America conducted an alternative analysis of the bill’s impacts, in which he concluded that the bill would cost the taxpayer $2 million and increase the number of abortions by roughly 1,840 annually.

The gross monetization of human lives that this debate highlighted is merely a symptom of our overall cultural degradation of the value, dignity, and worth of EVERY human being, regardless of their age, level of development, or social circumstances. Our voices as medical experts have never been more important! Our commitment to care for our patients should not be impacted by state financial concerns or by finances in general. Additionally, the voices of Drs. Wheeler and Perille, both AAPLOG members, at that hearing were invaluable. Our voices need to be heard in every state house across the country!

Another source, Colorado Pregnancy Care Alliance, discussed this new legislation, and the process used to present it in the following letter:

Good Morning Tamera,

I want to take a moment to thank you for your unwavering dedication to protecting life and serving women and families in Colorado. As you know, the challenges we face continue to grow, and with the passage of SB25-183, we cannot remain silent.

This legislation forces Colorado taxpayers to fund abortion, with the fiscal note explicitly stating that it is "cheaper" to abort than to provide support for mothers and babies. Beyond the moral and ethical concerns, the process by which this bill was pushed through raises serious issues. The use of Rule 14 to limit debate to just two hours—and then Rule 16 to cut it off entirely on multiple radical bills—has stifled voices that deserve to be heard, including ours.

Furthermore, when Coloradans voted on Amendment 79, which expanded healthcare funding, the fact that these funds would be used for abortion was never disclosed. We know from national polling—such as the January 2025 Marist Poll—that a majority of Americans do not support taxpayer-funded abortion. Many voters would have reconsidered their support for the amendment had this information been transparent.

For these reasons, we sent a letter to Governor Polis, urging him to veto SB25-183 and calling for legislative transparency and integrity. This is about more than just one bill; it’s about standing up for truth, for life, and for the democratic process.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. In the meantime, we hope to see you at the March for Life on Friday in Denver. We would love to have you stand with us.

Thank you for standing with us. Together, we will not back down.

With gratitude,

Colorado March for Life

What a blessing for me to have three generations walking together at the Annual Colorado March for Life in Denver on April 11th, 2025! My grandchildren and daughters joined me to proclaim the value of life at the rally!

There were also several prolife vendors with tables set up, inspirational music, and motivating speakers.

Two things that really stood out to me were the number of “white coats” who rallied with us. They are prolife medical providers proclaiming their support of the Hippocratic oath by wearing their white medical coats and walking together with us.

There were also hundreds of young people walking with us, which is an exciting testimonial of new generations of prolife advocates!

The estimated total of participants at the walk was 3500! There were 80 prolife groups in attendance and our own Granby PRC staff and volunteers were invited to stand with other PRCs on the State Capitol steps during the rally.

It was extremely encouraging to experience so many people coming together to advocate for life in Colorado!
