Parshat Vayishlach

Alone and engaged in a battle for survival. This could describe countless generations of Jews and captures the feeling that many of us have right now. Yet, this is how the Torah describes Yaakov Avinu in the beginning of this week's parsha.

While Yaakov sends the rest of his family to safety, he remains behind and is ambushed by the angel of Esav. He fights with everything that he has to the point where the angel cannot best him. This frightening description gives us chills, which it surely has for many other generations as it describes the lonely fight that we often find ourselves engaged in.

Yet, even in this terrifying battle, we find hope. Yaakov is unmovable even by an angel, and the Ramban notes that this is another example of maaseh avot siman le'banim, the actions of the forefathers foreshadow the actions of later generations. Ramban takes confidence from this story and the story of Jews from other generations who "suffered and overcame."

In our generation too, we find ourselves faced with many foes, but we must take strength from our forefathers. We recognize that as a nation we are immovable like Yaakov, and for this we take on the name Yisrael. We have fought with nations and forces and overcome, and we will continue to do so until it brings the times of Mashiach.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Dani Bauer

Rav Rotem's Surprise Return From Israel!

Our own Rav Rotem Shamay made a surprise visit from Israel last week where he's spent the last several months defending our Jewish homeland as a member of the Israel Defense Forces.

Rav Rotem surprised each of his children and delivered heartfelt words of inspiration to our middle school and high school students. Our high school students and faculty, along with our 4th and 5th graders, had a spontaneous celebration complete with singing and dancing. It was an emotional and uplifting experience for all of us, as we welcomed back a true hero of our community and the Jewish people.

What a pleasure and honor to see him and to share this memorable and special moment with him and his family. Am Yisrael Chai!

News from Kohelet Yeshiva

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Wednesday night for a special evening and CLE event featuring David M. Schizer, Dean Emeritus and Harvey R. Miller Professor of Law & Economics at Columbia Law School.

Professor Schizer, who serves as co-chair of the Columbia Center on Israeli Legal Studies and the Richman Center for Law, Business and Public Policy and was recently named a co-chair of Columbia's antisemitism task force, addressed a number of timely and important topics, including antisemitism on college campuses.

Attendees received a complimentary copy of Professor Schizer’s book, “How to Save the World in (Six Not-So-Easy) Steps: Bringing Out the Best in Nonprofits.”

Our 6th through 10th grade boys heard from Charlie Breda, a sophomore at The Frisch School in NJ, about Project Tzitzis, a wonderful initiative that gives out tzitzis to anyone in the world who needs them. Since October 7th, Project Tzitzis has distributed over 100,000 pairs of tzitzis to soldiers in Israel! Our students learned the halachot of tzitzis and made tzitzis for Rav Rotem Shamay’s IDF unit. While they were making tzitzis, they had a surprise visit from Rav Rotem, who came back from Israel! He spoke to the students about the importance of what they are doing and why it’s so inspiring for his fellow soldiers.

Our middle school girls heard from Mrs. Stein’s son, Asher Stein, who’s currently serving in the IDF, about why having a Tefillat Haderech card made by students in the U.S. would be important for his fellow soldiers to have and also help increase morale. The girls made beautiful Tefillat Haderech cards for chayalim that were laminated. Our Bat Sherut, Shalev, brought them with her to Israel to distribute to IDF soldiers.

Mrs. Troodler had the opportunity to meet up with some of our Kohelet alumni in Israel during her recent trip (they’re all doing well, Baruch Hashem!).

Our 4/5 students took a trip to Wissahickon Valley Park in conjunction with their current social studies and science curriculum. In social studies, students have been learning about geography and exploring the significance of national and state parks. In science, the focus has been on soil, rocks and landforms. Wissahickon Valley Park offers an experiential learning opportunity that enabled our students to deepen their understanding of the concepts covered in class this year.

Our K/1 students enjoyed an olive factory that came to their classrom, which featured Rabbi Eli Strasberg.
