Celebrating Black History Month
|
|
"For me, Black History Month is an opportunity for reflection on the experiences of my ancestors, to marvel at their perseverance, and to be thankful for their sacrifices and their cultural and spiritual gifts. It is also a time when I am aware that others may be reflecting on that history and experiencing those gifts who would not normally otherwise. That Black History Month is now in its sixth decade is a testament to our national commitment to recognize the unique struggles and contributions that make up Black history, but it is also a reminder of the work yet to be done to make ours a more just society."
Professor Rich teaches LAW 275p: The Origin and Evolution of American Civil Rights Law (4 Units) during spring semester. This course meets a GE requirement - Category H: Traditions and Historical Foundations.

Lift Every Voice Series
Highlights
|
|
In partnership with USC’s Center for Black Cultural and Student Affairs (CBCSA), the Gould Office of Undergraduate Law hosted a conversation on Feb. 2, featuring the law school’s Assistant Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Dr. Nickey Woods.
At the talk – titled “Lift Every Voice: My Journey. My Pathway” – Dr. Woods shared a broad range of lessons and experiences, from career to family. A Southern California native, Dr. Woods discussed her experiences as a Division I college basketball player, her love for writing including screenplays, her consultancy at Nickelodeon, and her pursuit of a doctorate at USC. She also offered guidance about how to handle difficult DEI conversations and making time for self-care. View photos from the event >

Students in USC Gould’s undergraduate law minor programs offer insights into what inspired them to study law, share memorable experiences inside the classroom, and discuss what they hope to accomplish in the future.

“As a pre-law student I had a desire to take courses examining the law since my major only offered business-related material. I hoped to gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals of law while also taking a couple classes in areas like international crime and psychology. Law 200 on Law and Society with Professor Haddad was the first course I took for a GE credit my freshman year. It ended up being my favorite course that semester and sold me on taking the additional classes for the minor.”
— Hakob Shamilian, Minor in Legal Studies (Business Administration major)

“As a PPL major, I'm very invested in legal studies and the origins and ideologies of legal practices. While I'm subjected to an eclectic curriculum within the major, I found myself desiring more in-depth and specific courses relating to the law. My major only requires one course in the Undergraduate Law department, but I was eager to take on even more. I declared the Legal Studies minor to explore my more nuanced interests within the field and to subject myself to an academic environment which previews my post-graduate plans.”
— Courtney Woloson, Minor in Legal Studies (Philosophy, Politics, & Law major)
