Underground Pipe Monitoring (UPM) Solution

The WAND-UPM system, developed by Inductosense, UK enables cost-effective & convenient thickness monitoring of underground pipes. High quality thickness data can be acquired easily, and as frequently as required, without the need to expose the pipe, and without the need to remove the pipe coating each time.


This innovative solution means internal corrosion of underground assets can be accurately monitored at a fraction of the cost of alternative buried pipe monitoring solutions. The solution adapts existing WAND technology, by integrating extension cables that connect to the WAND sensors that are permanently installed on the underground pipes to an aboveground measurement acquisition station.


Thickness data can then be acquired from any desired sensor on the buried pipe, simply by using the WAND handheld data collection tool at the corresponding measurement terminal.

How does the WAND-UPM system work?
  • Install Inductosense WAND sensors on new pipes prior to burial, or during a routine recovery of existing pipe assets. Coatings can then be applied on top of the permanently installed, ultrathin sensors


  • Connect the extension cables to the preinstalled WAND sensors. WAND-UPM measurement collection stations can then be installed easily at the required locations - up to 4m aboveground from the buried pipe. Each station hosts up to 8 sensors



  • Acquire thickness data from the sensors via the measurement stations, simply with the press of a button on the WAND handheld data collector - anybody can acquire the thickness readings, not necessarily specialist inspectors. Data can then be uploaded to Inductosense software to enable remote analysis, trending, reporting, and exporting
