Underground Speakeasy Won't Be a Secret for Long

Contributor: Jamie Richardson

Cabarrus Weekly is giving you a peek inside this members-only social club that is actually affordable and packed with options.

Exclusive, private clubs are making a comeback and you don’t have to leave Cabarrus County to find one of the coolest and most unique. Located in the center of downtown Kannapolis, The Blind Fox has come to life in the former 1930’s fallout shelter of Mr. Cannon.

  • Ken Lingafelt (one of the owners) was born and bred in North Carolina and has lived in Kannapolis for most of his life. He said he and his fellow innovators that form the West Ave District Group “wanted to create something that no one else was doing” by turning this incredible space into a social club.

🥃 So, What Are We Drinking?

Bourbon is all the rage right now and the Blind Fox features a selection of over one hundred new, vintage, and rare bourbons.

  • Their certified mixologists will expertly guide you through a curated list of spirits, craft you a classic or seasonal cocktail, or pour your new favorite imported wine or local craft beer.

✔️ One of a Kind Event Space

The first time we stepped into the Barrel Room, we thought we were on set for an episode of Game of Thrones! A main table that extends the length of the room, lined with candelabras is the centerpiece. But this space also has intimate seating around the fireplace as well as high-top tables, depending on your preference.

  • The Barrel Room is available for private events but is also being used by the Blind Fox to give members an abundance of food, beverage, and entertainment options to enjoy.

🎲♟️ Cabarrus County Is Home to NC's Largest Board Game Café ♟️🎲

Contributor: Kayla Chadwick-Schultz

Tucked beneath a variety of delicious restaurant offerings, on the lower level of the Gibson Mill Market, there is a place where all imaginations are welcome.

  • It’s a place where regulars arrive and their usual café order is waiting for them at their usual table because the owners took the time to get to know them.

In truth, Luck Factory Games is more than just a place; it’s magic—and it just so happens to be North Carolina’s largest board game café. Co-owner Nick Paladino told us he “believes board games are a great unifier,” as he gave Cabarrus Weekly a tour of their large facility. “Everyone can play.”

🎲 What Is a Board Game Café? This entertainment destination offers an expansive library of over 1,200 board games for you to play while you enjoy a tasty treat or beverage.

  • All you have to do is purchase a $5 day pass and you’re free to play as many games you want, as long as you want until the store closes. Play the same game or swap out a dozen different ones. You create the fun!

Who Will You Find at Luck Factory Games? There are young children guiding grandparents through the “Family” section of games and groups of diverse thirtysomethings enjoying beers around a gaming table. You’ll also find some puzzle fanatics who like a little friendly competition at the Puzzle Challenges that are offered regularly!

  • Nick’s wife and co-owner Alison aptly compared Luck Factory to Cheers because they do their best to learn their customers' names. However, unlike the reality of home, there is not a single electronic device on display.

🐉 Besides their enormous board game library, Luck Factory’s biggest draw, garnering around 40 players each session, is Dungeons & Dragons. That’s right, the classic tabletop role-playing game that’s been around since the mid-1970s.

  • While some of you may recognize the game from its popular role in Netflix’s Stranger Things, others may still conjure up the stereotypical image of what D&D used to look like—but let’s be honest…This game is for everyone.

So Much More to See and Do!

🏘️ Is a Recession Ahead in the Housing Market?

Graphic Credit: Canopy Realtor® Association

👋 Goodbye 2022 – remembered as a year of housing volatility. Hello, 2023 – likely to be the year of the long-lost normalcy returning to the market.

  • If you are wondering if this is good – YES, it is. Normalization is great for stability.

Mortgage rates are expected to stabilize while home sales and prices moderate after recent highs, according to the National Association of Realtor’s forecast.

Not Increasing as Fast Isn’t the Same as Decreasing

Realtor.com® Chief Economist Danielle Hale was upbeat about the prospects of property appreciation, projecting a 5.4% increase in existing-home prices for 2023.

  • “We think price growth will be half of what it was in 2022, and we may see some months of year-over-year declines,” Hale said. “But overall, we believe prices will be higher. [Housing] shortage conditions are still going to be present in the market.”

Shop From the Biggest Selection of Craft Beer Around!

It’s a rainy Sunday morning and the Vortex Bottle Shop is filled with families, couples, and individuals seated at the bar and the high-top tables spread throughout the restaurant, everyone enjoying Sunday Brunch from the scratch kitchen and drinks from the bar.

Owner Matt Widerman, a resident of Harrisburg, opened Vortex Bottle Shop almost 5 years ago. The shop is a combination of food, music, beer, and wine that represent Matt’s personal vibe.

  • When he was younger, brewing beer was a hobby and at one time he considered starting a brewery but decided a bottle shop was a better idea.

Previously having lived in the Pacific Northwest, Matt liked the idea of a bottle shop, where you could shop from hundreds of beer and wine selections to drink while you dine in or take it with you. This was a new concept in Cabarrus County but has been well received.

🏎️ Kannapolis, Start Your Engines 🏎️

Slot car racing is coming to downtown Kannapolis with the opening of The Slot Car Track Kannapolis on Saturday, January 28th!

🏎️ Randy and Shelley McAnulty previously operated slot car tracks in downtown Concord and Granite Quarry, but after COVID hit, decided to relocate. They have been waiting over a year for their new location to open and they say it's been worth it.

  • “Kannapolis is always busy and we can add to the entertainment value,” said Shelley. They also like being in the hometown of Dale Earnhardt because of their love of racing.

What Do I Need to Get Started?

🏁 Guests can bring their own cars or can rent one for $12 for 30 minutes of racing. Have your own cars and a controller? Then you can practice all day for only $12!

City Council Member Ryan Dayvault Fully Approves!

👍 Dayvault is proud to have the McAnulty’s choose downtown Kannapolis for their business.

  • “The McAnulty’s run a very family-oriented facility and it is a great way for kids to begin developing STEM skills and the arts as well…from building and maintaining the cars to designing and painting car bodies. I started racing them when I was 10 years old and have continued to enjoy it 27 years later,” he said.

Before you race on over this weekend, visit our website for their full story and how this business fits in perfectly to its new home in downtown Kannapolis.
