Understanding W.A.S.H. Grants and

Water Insecurity at our Schools

Water insecurity refers to situations where there isn't enough water of suitable quality to meet the needs of a population or environment. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including water scarcity, inadequate infrastructure, and poor water management. One of the biggest challenges at our Carnevali Schools is availability of safe, drinking water which is a common issue in this region.

Carnevali Foundation was thrilled to receive a 3yr W.A.S.H grant from International Rotary of Yarmouth, MA, USA and Hyderabad, India, which will help us provide safe water conditions for our students. WASH is an important guiding principal in all the schools that Carnevali Foundation supports. The acronym for WASH stands for: Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene.

WATER can be scarce and often contaminated. All our schools have a Reverse Osmosis System which collects water (ground, rain, city pipes) and purifies it; 50% is potable and the other 50% can be saved for other purposes (piped to toilets, tree watering, cleaning). Photo above is one of our RO systems.

SANITATION means a clean school yard, toilets routinely cleaned, and floors swept. Carnevali Foundation provides an ayah and watchman, who maintain and secure our campuses. Most live in a room on our campus.

HYGIENE signifies that teachers and students follow best practices for cleanliness. Teachers routinely instruct students on thorough hand washing relative to eating and bathroom habits.

Safe water and good hygiene keeps children alive

RO systems are installed on platforms in India. These systems use a process that forces water through membranes to remove impurities and contaminants.

It is not customary to use knives and forks at meals. Students line up to use the soap dispenser and are taught the importance of hand washing before eating meals.

Students are washing hands in sinks that also provide drinking water so they are able to fill water bottles. These sinks are designed to lock at night for security.

Global Impact

Water insecurity is a growing global issue, affecting billions of people and impacting food security, public health, and environmental stability.
