Understanding Your New Practice Permit

Your new Practice Permit has two new sections on the bottom: Advanced Restricted Activities, and Conditions.

Advanced Restricted Activities

Previously, registrants with Advanced Restricted Activities (ARA) Authorization had a separate ARA Permit in addition to a General Practice Permit. Your ARA Authorizations are now included on your Practice Permit. You will no longer need to display separate permits as the new Permit includes all the pertinent information needed to be displayed in one place.

Once you have applied for and received your new Advanced Restricted Activities authorization and it has been approved by the College, your permit will automatically update in the Registrant Portal. Your ARA authorizations will be listed in the new lower left section on your permit. The separate ARA permits previously used for ARA authorizations (like the one pictured below) should no longer be displayed. The College is no longer issuing separate ARA permits for ARA authorizations.

Reminder: Entering your ARA courses in the Continuing Competence section of the Portal is not a substitution for completing an ARA application. Registrants seeking ARA Authorization must fill out the ARA Authorization Form, available in the Portal, and submit the form to registration@crdha.ca within six months of completing the course. Per the ARA Policy, a registrant must not perform the Advanced Restricted Activity until they have been notified in writing that their application has been approved and their name has been added to the respective CRDHA Roster.

Conditions

Every permit will now have a Conditions section in the lower right corner. For most registrants this box will be empty. For those that do have conditions set out by the Registrar, they will be listed in this box. Those registrants with conditions would be aware of what they are. There is a list of possible conditions that could be imposed on a practice permit in Section 12 of the Dental Hygienists Profession Regulation for those interested in learning more.

Displaying Your Permit

Ensure that you are in compliance with section 36(5) of the Health Professions Act, where it states all regulated health professionals (including RDHs) must:

(a) display the regulated member’s practice permit where the regulated member provides professional services, or

(b) on request, make the regulated member’s practice permit available for inspection.

You must have a current copy of your practice permit available to meet the Health Professions Act requirements listed above.

Your permit does not necessarily need to be displayed out in the open, but it must be readily available to show at your workplace if asked. You could have a printed copy on hand or present proof of your active registration by referring to the Verify a Dental Hygienist section on the CRDHA website.
