As parents we often feel bewildered and exasperated by our teenagers and their behavior. We tend to forget that challenging authority is a normal part of development. Adolescents are trying out their own ideas, preferences, and decisions. They are trying to figure out who they are as individuals, separate from their parents. Rather than react with anger, we can engage them in dialogue: "You feel strongly about that." "That's important to you." "You wish things were different."

Here's how you can use this idea to have a better life ...

The next time your teen does or says something that frustrates you, be glad for the teen's developing independence. Enjoy the faltering steps towards adulthood. Set an example by engaging him or her in respectful and thoughtful conversation.
