PA Chamber Opposes Plan to Raise Taxes on Small Businesses
Harrisburg - Today, Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry Director of Public Affairs Michael Plummer issues the below statement on a planned hearing of the House Finance Subcommittee on Tax Modernization and Reform to discuss raising small business taxes from 3.07 percent to 12 percent:
"The proposal that House Democrats are scheduled to consider tomorrow would destroy small businesses across the Commonwealth by quadrupling their taxes overnight. House Bill 1773 would sabotage our economic competitiveness and undermine bipartisan efforts to attract and retain businesses in Pennsylvania.
"This bill would raise taxes by nearly 300 percent on almost 180,000 small businesses, which collectively employ more than 2.2 million people. Even holding a hearing on this bill sends a chilling message to anyone looking to grow or start a business here.
"Employers are moving out of our state in droves, and they are taking good-paying jobs with them. Last year, Pennsylvania had the fourth-highest number of residents leaving for other states, and we hold the unfortunate distinction of having the lowest rate of new entrepreneurs in the country. Economic factors are a big reason why, and proposals like this to raise taxes on hardworking Pennsylvanians will only worsen these trends.

Geisinger names Terry Gilliland, MD, as president and
future chief executive officer
DANVILLE, Pa. - Today, Geisinger announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Terry Gilliland, MD, as president of Geisinger Health and selected him to assume the role of chief executive officer (CEO) once Jaewon Ryu, MD, JD, transitions to CEO of Risant Health. Dr. Gilliland will become the eighth chief executive officer in Geisinger's 109-year history.
"On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I am thrilled to welcome Terry Gilliland to Geisinger," said Heather Acker, chair of the Geisinger Board of Directors. "The board executed an extensive national search before coming to this decision. The role of leading Geisinger is unique. It requires passion for our mission - to make better health easier for our patients and members across Pennsylvania; a drive to innovate care delivery; and a commitment to educating future caregivers. We are confident that Dr. Gilliland is the right person to lead Geisinger on our path forward."

UC Fraud and UC-1099G Tax Forms
Victim of unemployment fraud?
Criminals using stolen identities filed claims for unemployment compensation in other people's names. Because unemployment compensation is taxable, state unemployment agencies submit Forms 1099-G to individuals in whose names and Social Security numbers the unemployment compensation was paid and to the IRS. Victims of fraud who receive Forms 1099-G with inaccurate amounts of unemployment compensation in Box 1 should notify the state agencies of the inaccuracies and request corrected Forms 1099-G. Did you know........
Small businesses represent the largest segment by number of most local chamber membership rolls. Results in the research study by The Shapiro Group, Inc. and Market Street indicate the impact of local chamber membership on small businesses is very powerful. If a consumer knows a small business is a member of its local chamber, the business enjoys a 44 percent increase in its consumer favorability rating, a 51 percent increase in consumer awareness, a 57 percent increase in its local reputation and a 63 percent increase in the likelihood that consumers will patronize the business in the future.
Research indicates that chamber membership stimulates business-to-business commerce in the local community. Other businesses in town are more likely to do business with you and your company if you are a member of the local chamber. Because a major part of a small business typically comes from business-to-business services, it is essential to maintain a positive standing within the local business community.
