The India Group’s (TIG’s) mission is to support low-income families in India, primarily in the areas of education and healthcare. While educational costs are predictable, medical expenses can be much harder to anticipate. This year, along with routine treatments for illnesses like the flu and malaria, we’ve had three serious medical emergencies in the families we support.

Varun

Varun, who turned 10 in September, was ready for 4th grade when a sudden high fever led to a serious leg infection that doctors later discovered had spread to his bone. Varun spent weeks in the hospital and now requires intravenous antibiotics several times a week and is unable to walk, forcing him to drop out of school. Varun’s family has expressed their deep gratitude to TIG as they would not be able to afford Vurun’s healthcare without our support. His care has already exceeded $1,500, more than his father earns in a year.

Chanda

Chanda, a mother of three, was hit by a car while walking to the market one evening. Initially, it seemed she had only sustained minor injuries, needing just five stitches for a leg wound. However, Chanda’s wound became infected, leading to a hospital readmission. Since then, she has had to commute daily to the hospital to have the wound dressed. The hospital is a 30-minute commute each way, so not only are there medical expenses, but there are also daily transportation costs that TIG needs to cover for her.

Ajju

Ajju has a history of kidney stones and previously underwent surgery funded by TIG. Following the surgery, doctors recommended that he drink bottled water instead of local water, which contains minerals that contribute to the formation of kidney stones. TIG covers the cost of the bottled water, about $12 per month. Despite this, Ajju developed a large kidney stone, which needed immediate medical attention at a hospital two hours away from Khajuraho. The surgery was successful, and he has one final check-up.

Your generous contributions have been critical in helping us respond to the urgent medical emergencies faced by the families we serve. Because of your support, we are able to provide life-saving healthcare and essential resources in their moments of greatest need. We are deeply grateful for your continued support and could not do this important work without you.
