Imagine a Day Your Family Won't Forget!

October 1st Football Game at West Point

Imagine a day like this:

  • One of the time-honored traditions of an Army West Point game day, a full-dress cadet parade takes place on "The Plain" three hours prior to kickoff (weather permitting) for every home game.
  • Black Knights Alley is a Fan Fest that features live music, inflatables for kids, food and beverage, beer tent, face painting, autograph tables with members from various Army West Point teams, a different interactive sport every game, tailgate show, as well as other vendors.

  • 1,000 Cadets march onto the field, and a member of the Cadet Glee Club and the Army Band perform the National Anthem.
  • Look skyward as you see West Point cadets jump from a helicopter and land minutes later on the field as they parachute in the official game ball and flags approximately 10 minutes before kickoff.

And this is all before the football game begins!  Learn more about Game Day

AAHPO CME Program renamed:

The AAHPO, Dr. Raffy Hovanessian

Medical Education Program

Raffy-Funeral

The AAHPO Board of Directors and the Hovanessian family are proud to announce a new name for the AAHPO CME Program: The AAHPO, Dr. Raffy Hovanessian Medical Education Program. Now in its eleventh year, the program is the brainchild of the late Dr. Raffy Hovanessian (shown at right), a beloved AAHPO Board Member, distinguished physician, and tireless Armenian-American philanthropist. The program has been successful in providing critically needed skills to the physicians of Artsakh. The AAHPO, Dr. Raffy Hovanessian Medical Education Program is much appreciated by both the physicians and government of Artsakh. Now, more than ever, this program needs our support. A fundraiser is planned for October 16 in Englewood Cliffs, N.J. More details will be forthcoming.

A Simple Sport + A Drive to Win =

AAHPO 5K Run/Walk Celebrity Walker

Sherry Brosnahan

Editor’s note: This October 22, when AAHPO members and supporters lace up their shoes to participate in the 5K Run/Walk, we are privileged to have champion racewalker Sherry Brosnahan  (shown at left, accepting one of her many awards) walk with us!

It’s interesting to note that Sherry Brosnahan of Bridgewater, NJ considered three other sports before selecting racewalking as her athletic focus. Had she gone another way, this world record-holding racewalker might have been a winning competitor in golf, tennis, or equestrian sports!

“I chose racewalking because of its simplicity,” Sherry said. “All you need is a good pair of walking shoes, and you’re off!”

Of course, to be a champion like Sherry, you need a whole lot more than that, including commitment, focus, love of competition, hard work and years of training, Sherry said she did not start off with all that.

“I was always a walker. My mother would walk everywhere, she didn’t have a car at home. My mother, myself and three siblings – all five of us – would walk to the grocery store and walk back with the groceries. Of course, we walked to school and everywhere we needed to go,” Sherry remembers.

Sherry always had a competitive drive, and for a time as an adult she channeled that into obedience competition with her dog. In 1997, the dog developed cancer, and its competitive career ended.

“A friend of mine said, ‘What are you going to do with your competitiveness?’ and then posed the question: ‘In a perfect world, what sport would you pick?’ Sherry remembered. “I chose racewalking.”

Sherry got herself a book, The Rockport Book of Walking, and started to train. Her first racewalk was 5 miles – and she won her age group. As she finished, a man asked her, “Who is your coach?”

“Of course, I didn’t have a coach,” said Sherry. “That man was Olympian Dave Romansky, and he became my coach.”

At that time, Sherry was 46 years old. She set a goal to be, in four years time, the fastest 50 year old female racewalker. The very next year she went to racewalking Nationals and finished fourth. Two years after setting that ambitious goal, Sherry went to racewalking Worlds in England – and medaled! It turned out that Sherry was best at longer distances, and in fact, broke the world record for Women’s 50-Kilometer Racewalk.

Now 70, and retired from competition, Sherry has a new goal: To be as active as long as she can. Stay tuned for a future article that shares Sherry’s tips on remaining healthy no matter what your age.

Please plan to walk (or run) with us on October 22 at Overpeck Park, Ridgefield Park, NJ. This great family-oriented Run/Walk begins at 1 pm. Along with meeting world-class racewalker Sherry Broshahan, you will help raise funds to support AAHPO's Medical Mission to Armenia. You may register for the race/walk at www.RaceForum.com/aahpo

It's Easy! Sign up for Roundup and Amazon Smile
Here are two easy ways to help AAHPO every time you shop:

1.Roundup App

Roundup allows you to effortlessly donate to AAHPO by "rounding up" your credit card purchases to the nearest dollar, then sending those modest donations directly to AAHPO.

The process is simple. First, go to the app store on your smartphone, and download the Roundup App for free. Once inside the Roundup App, you simply choose AAHPO (Armenian American Healthcare Professionals Organization) as your nonprofit. Then link a credit or debit card and select a monthly minimum goal.

It's great! You are only being asked to donate your spare change. For most of us, it’s much easier to say “yes” to parting with nickels and dimes, than to a set amount of money. But for the vulnerable Armenians helped by AAHPO, those nickels and dimes add up to healthcare education and assistance!

2.AmazonSmile

This is a simple way for you to support your favorite charitable organization every time you shop at Amazon, at no cost to you. When you designate AAHPO as your charity, Amazon will donate .05% of what you spend directly to AAHPO. This donation is at no cost to you.

AmazonSmile is available at smile.amazon.com on your web browser. You may click here to sign up

If you already have the Amazon shopping app on your smartphone, you may activate AmazonSmiles on your Amazon Shopping App:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Click on AmazonSmile
  3. Search for and select Armenian American Healthprofessionals Organization
