Port of Kansas City Year Wraps up Full Year of Operations
|
The Port of Kansas City-Woodswether Terminal saw approximately 45,000 tons of cargo this year, the first full year of operations under Port KC. That is an increase of over 30,000 tons from 2015. The barges transported fertilizer and mill scale, with peak months being March, May and August. Barge traffic will stop over the winter months and will resume once precipitation raises the water level. Using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) predictions, the port expects to resume traffic around April 2017. Next year, the Woodswether Terminal expects to continue its growth and receive 70,000 tons of fertilizer, scrap and mill scale.
Additional rail construction is also underway at the port, which will reconnect rail to the Union Pacific Main Line and meet Port KC's goals of creating a multimodal freight center. The railroad spur will be completed mid-January 2017.
