Econ Happenings
Union Park Middle School students hard at work in class! Science with Ms. Hubbell:
The students of Ms. Hubbell’s 8th grade science class are seen participating in a science laboratory experiment. The students were testing to find the pH of a substance (how much or little hydrogen it has). This helps us understand how dangerous the substance may be and how to safely neutralize a substance that can harm us if spilled or leaked in to the environment.
Staffulty meeting #1 of 2023!
The first staffulty meeting of 2023 included a presentation by our teachers who are from different countries. They presented information about culture and every day life in their country. The staffulty was even treated to home-made treats from each teachers home country. It was a delicious and fun experience.

Friday's Motivational Moment!
The Father of Black History Month
Carter Woodson was born in rural Virginia in 1875 to former slaves who could not read or write. And he didn't start serious education until he was 20. Despite such head winds, he rose to become a Harvard-educated Ph.D. and a world traveler who was called the father of Black history.

What made Woodson special, beyond the odds he overcame to get the most basic education, was that once he started, he didn't stop. He earned a doctorate in an era when they were rare and a master's was quite enough to teach at the university level.

He was a life-long learner. There was no mentoring, no guidance counselors, no coaches, no one pushing him in the right direction. This was a person who wanted the whole universe to be open to him and he knew an education could do that.

Some of his educational achievements included his acceptance to Harvard. He was awarded a doctorate in 1912, the first and only child of slaves to do so. In 1920, Woodson became dean of what today is West Virginia State University. During his short tenure, he increased enrollment, including expanding opportunities for other late-in-life learners.

In addition to writing and editing to correct the historical record regarding Black contributions to American history, Woodson in 1926 launched an annual Black History Week in February. He chose the month for the Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln birthdays, both of which were celebrated by Blacks.

Carter Woodson took a passion for wanting to tell the story of real people — not just presidents and great generals — in particular black Civil War veterans, and formalized that into a month, February, dedicated to Black history. Starting as the second week of February in 1926, it was officially recognized in 1976 by the federal government as a month-long celebration.

The Lesson for our Econs?
This past Wednesday began Black History Month. Many people have never heard of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, but it is was efforts over 100 years ago that got the ball rolling. And the two great traits that helped him along? 1) His thirst for learning; and 2) An incredible sense of perseverance. Despite tough odds, he simply never quit on his goals.
