LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIBERTY SHIPS EVENT!

Journalist Doug Most’s fascinating book, Launching Liberty: The Epic Race to Build the Ships that Took America to War, shares incredible stories about the development of the Liberty ships fleet during World War II. During the initial stages of collaboration between British and American shipbuilders, preeminent American naval architect William Francis Gibbs was consulted in a secret meeting about the production and design plans for the planned fleet. Gibbs had strong feedback to the British on their proposals, calling for them to triple their output from 20 ships to at least 60 and for the transformation of the sparse British plans into a detailed modular design that would massively expedite ship production.

Doug Most will join the Conservancy on Wednesday, September 17th at 7pm (eastern) on Zoom for an exciting presentation about the unprecedented planning, production, and partnerships that launched the Liberty ships. We hope you will join us for this incredible book talk. To register, please click HERE

GENEROUS DONATION TO THE CONSERVANCY'S COLLECTION

The Conservancy recently received an exceptional donation from Claire and H. Michael Raley in Florida of over 22,000 baggage stickers featuring the United States Lines logo. These first class baggage stickers were used by SS United States crew members to organize the hundreds of suitcases on every voyage.

The Raleys inherited this impressive stash from Claire's cousin, Frank James Frazier III, an accomplished designer and collector. Frank’s wide-ranging artistic career included work as an art director at the botanical Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven, FL as well as many commercial projects, notably with the Florida Citrus Commission. He also directed art and costuming for the 1974 movie The Legend of Earl Durand directed by John Patterson

We are so grateful to the Raleys for gifting this collection to the Conservancy. Donations from supporters and collectors from around the world have been invaluable in augmenting the Conservancy’s unparalleled curatorial collection of art, artifacts, and archival documentation from America’s Flagship.

We now have over 200 lists, and this number continues to grow. We need your help to complete our collection! Do you have any passenger lists from the SS United States to share? If so, please reach out to archives@ssusc.org. Our collection is in the process of being digitized into an easily searchable database for family historians and researchers.
