Items purchased from the Wish List will be packaged along with a book for each child. The books are being provided by Heart of America, with personalized notes written by United Methodists at the Annual Conference Session, to encourage students.
More than 300 United Methodists will also be leaving the hotel in Baltimore to do painting, repairs, and beautification at local elementary schools and other local sites.
The service project, based on the principles of the BWC’s Missional Action Planning Initiative, is grounded in deep listening to local educators and partners as we seek to equip students and families with the right resources to learn and thrive. By transforming spaces where young people learn and live, we’re transforming lives.
As part of the service project, we are excited to partner with Heart of America (HOA), a national nonprofit focused on educational equity through the renovation of spaces and resource distributions.
Why is this project so relevant to our annual conference theme, All About Love? The needs facing young students in Baltimore City Schools are alarming and urgent. According to national literacy experts, a school library that meets resource recommendations will have 15-20 books per child. In Baltimore, the startling rate is two to three books per student. And most of those books are out of date and contextually irrelevant.
