"Celebrating God's Presence, Serving All People"
United Church News August 23rd, 2019
"For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven." (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

For the past six years, I've had the great privilege to serve God alongside United Church's Music Director Luwayne Arnold. Luwayne's faith and enthusiasm for music has been such a blessing to me. Hence, it is with both sadness and joy that I share with the congregation that Luwayne has made the decision to retire, effective April 30th, 2020. I'm sad because she has been such a great friend and colleague who I will miss very much. But I am also joyous for Luwayne and for her future plans to which God is calling her.

Luwayne shared with me this note that I will share with all of you:

"This has been a dream job for me. I am so grateful for United Church, the choir, and the Music Committee. And I’ve worked with a lot of pastors, but Mark will always be on the top of my list. I will be retiring at the end of April and moving to my home in Franklin, TN with plans to winter in Naples during the seasonal months."

We plan to celebrate Luwayne Arnold's tenure at United Church at the 10AM worship service on Sunday, March 22nd 2020. Our celebration theme will be: "Finishing On A High Note: Honoring Music Director Luwayne Arnold." Put this date on your calendar today, and more details will be forthcoming in January.

No doubt, Luwayne's shoes will be hard to fill. In recent weeks, United Church's Executive Committee met to receive Luwayne's resignation. The group finalized an updated job description and also appointed a Music Director Search Committee that will include myself, a member of the Executive Committee, a member of the choir, a member of the music committee, a member of the bell choir, a parent representing the children's choir and a member of the congregation at large. The search committee will convene soon for their first meeting as they begin the task of searching for the servant God has called to build on Luwayne's achievements.

In the weeks and months ahead, I hope you will all join me in thanking Luwayne for her dedication to United Church over the years. Luwayne's time with us has been amazingly sweet. May her encore that is her retirement be even sweeter.

In Christ,
Pastor Mark

The Life of Billy Kim: From Houseboy to World Evangelist
By Billy Kim

On Sunday March 15th, 2020, United Church will be welcome to it’s pulpit world famous preacher Billy Kim. Billy Kim was plucked out of poverty and obscurity during wartime in Korea by what could only have been chance—or a miracle. Picked seemingly at random by an American GI to be the houseboy for their barracks in Korea, sixteen-year-old Billy began the path that would bring him to school in America. Later he would go on to be the translator for Billy Graham’s 1973 crusade, a preacher to millions, and an influential global leader for the spread of the gospel. He has been aptly described as the Billy Graham of Asia. The Life of Billy Kim is the story of how God’s work has been revealed in this one man’s life. For anyone looking for guidance as they serve the Lord, Billy Kim’s life will be a powerful inspiration of providence in a surrendered life.
