"Celebrating God's Presence, Serving All People"
United Church News July 26th, 2019
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In recent days, United Church and the Bargain Basket were both an active part of Camp Able, a ministry on Marco Island that blesses the physically disabled. To value someone who looks and acts different from us is a difficult challenge. In a famous essay on Christian ethics, Hans Reinders put it this way: "We have to learn to receive the disabled person as God's child, which is quite different from receiving him or her in light of our own dreams and expectations." The world sees no cause whatsoever to be grateful for the presence of disabled people. But we who follow Christ are grateful. For they, too, were created in the image of God. Indeed, all life created in the image of God is both sacred and precious. I hope you enjoy these pictures that show United Church's faith in action.

In Christ,

Pastor Mark
Report from Carol Peterson:
Camp Able is an overnight camp experience specifically created many years ago to provide a unique camping environment for persons with diverse abilities and gifts. On Saturday, July 20, 2019, United Church successfully fed supper to 200 Camp Able campers and volunteers at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. My husband George used Barb Rassler’s sloppy joe recipe for eight and turned it into a recipe for 200 people, using 30 pounds of lean hamburger and 26 packages of hamburger buns. Two weeks prior to the event, I asked before worship for volunteers to help set-up, serve, and cleanup. We had 24 volunteers from United Church! Due to the large number of volunteers, I divided the volunteers into two groups, set-up and clean-up. “Many hands make light work.” The organizers at Camp Able were very impressed that we had such enthusiastic participation. Our church is very blessed to have so many members who answered the call for a local mission project.

Respectfully submitted,
Carol Oulton Peterson, United Church’s Camp Able Contact

Focused Prayer Summer Study
Pastor Kathy's "Focused Prayer" course continues this Tuesday, July 30th in the Sanctuary.

This simple training technique allows us to bow our natural thoughts, to the super-natual power of God’s word where we can simply soak in our Heavenly Father’s divine love!

Each “Focused Prayer” session lasts 30 minutes. The text for this class will be a very familiar scripture, “The Lord’s Prayer”. We will be allowing Christ’s teaching of this prayer to his disciples to expand our hearts, minds and spirits.

Come, participate in a refreshing, life changing prayer experience and allow “The Lord’s Prayer” to revive you as never before!
Bargain Basket Update
The Bargain Basket backroom renovations are complete and the store celebrated yesterday with a 50% off everything sale! Don't forget, if you would like to make a contribution towards Hurricane Barry relief efforts, you can do so by donating to the jar up front by our registers. Every dollar helps!
On Friday, July 19th, the Bargain Basket also participated in the Camp Able fun by having some of the lovely ladies in the store for a shopping spree. Many of them selected jewelry and fun fashions. Pictured above are two campers, one showing off a Bargain Basket necklace that went perfectly with her Pocahontas talent show costume, and the other showing off a form fitting little black dress that was also showcased in her talent show performance!

Summer Book Discussions
Join Pastor Mark Williams on Wednesday, August 21st at 10am in the Sunset Conference Room for a discussion on Kevin Roose's The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner’s Semester.

As a sophomore at Brown University, Kevin Roose spent his days fitting right in with Brown's free-spirited, ultra-liberal student body. But when Roose leaves his Ivy League confines to spend a semester at Liberty University, a conservative Baptist school in Lynchburg, Virginia, obedience is no longer optional. Hoping to connect with his evangelical peers, Roose decides to enroll at Liberty as a new transfer student, chronicling his adventures in this daring report from the front lines of America's culture war. His journey takes him from an evangelical hip-hop concert to a spring break mission trip to Daytona Beach (where he learns to preach the gospel to partying coeds). He meets pastors' kids, closet doubters, Christian rebels, and conducts what would be the last print interview of Rev. Falwell's life.
