"Celebrating God's Presence, Serving All People"
United Church News May 24th, 2019
Have you ever felt like life has robbed you? Has your family suffered loss and are the demands of life unbearable? Well, you’re not alone but be encouraged! God promises us that if we call upon Him, He will supply a solution. Remaining flexible and obedient to His requests prepares us to receive His Divine supply however He chooses to send it. God knows our deepest needs and unlike anyone on this earth, He will begin pouring His miraculous supply directly into our house! Joy returns to our soul as we not only receive our personal supply…but as we allow the overflow to reach our neighbors and friends!

In this week’s sermon entitled, “Keep Pouring”, we will explore God’s Word recorded in 2 Kings, Chapter four where a grieving widow receives a miraculous supply from God which changes her life crushing circumstances into a glorious future! She finds relief and joy both physically, emotionally and spiritually as God pours out His blessing into her house in a most unexpected way!

Are you ready to receive a miracle? I am!

Food Drive for the Marco Food Pantry
Dear Congregation,

During our vacation Bible School in June, our children are going to be learning about loving their neighbors. As part of this learning, we will be teaching our children about the power of making an offering. To do this, we have embarked on a children's giving project that involves the Marco Island Food Pantry. We are asking for your help with this help with this project by bringing in a canned food offering on one of the next two Sundays: 5/26, and 6/2. Boxes for the canned food donations will be set up in the narthex and in the church office. Thank you for your generosity!

Bargain Basket Update

Join us every Thursday for our Thrifty Thursday special of the week!

The Bargain Basket may be closed on Monday, May 27th in honor of Memorial Day, but that does not stop us from celebrating...
Today, Friday, May 24th, everything in store is 50% off!
Last Saturday, I represented the Bargain Basket in the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament at the Island Club. My Bargain Basket golf shirt initiated significant positive conversation and warm feelings among locals who shop and donate. I was reminded, once again, of how grateful we all are for the Bargain Basket and all that it does to bless others on this island and beyond. As for my golf game, let's just say I lost enough balls in the water to warrant a trip to the sporting goods section of the Bargain Basket to re-stock my whole golf bag!

Month in Review
Last Sunday, the United Church of Marco presented a check for $13,750 to the Collier-Lee Honor Flight. This program sends local veterans to Washington DC to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice.

At United Church, we have a long-standing tradition of collecting a special Christmas and Easter offering to benefit an organization in our community. This Easter, the missions committee selected the Collier-Lee Honor Flight and the congregation responded generously with a record-breaking amount.

Rick Wobbe, a volunteer of the Honor Flight, stated that this program gives WWII veterans the feeling of freedom and love. He spoke of veterans that broke down in tears while viewing the memorial. As the check was presented, the congregation stood and sang America the Beautiful.
P astor Mark Williams and Samantha were honored to attend the  Greater Marco Family YMCA  and  Our Daily Bread Food Pantry ’s Lunch With Friends Over 60 where Pastor Mark started the group off with a wonderful prayer.

What a great program! On the 3rd Wednesday of each month, the Marco YMCA and Our Daily Bread Food Pantry provide a free lunch at the Marco Lutheran Church on Collier. With the support of local restaurants, businesses and sponsors, a luncheon (free of charge) is open to all area residents “60 or better”.

Each monthly event includes a time for networking, lunch, a program, and door prizes. They offer rides to and from. If you haven’t yet attended, be sure to do so next month on June 19th!

On Sunday, May 12th the UCMI Children's Church honored the women of our congregation by presenting each of them with a rose for Mother's Day.

To all the mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and other women in our lives that care for us and love us unconditionally- we hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day surrounded by love.

Last Sunday, May 19th, some of the ladies of UCMI performed as an ensemble. They did a terrific job and sang beautifully!

Fun Things To Do With A Disabled Senior
Pastor Kathy

The summer seasons heralds the kickoff of pleasurable and entertaining events with family and friends who visit in Marco Island.

Who doesn’t look forward to picnics in the park, outdoor family reunions and weekends at the beach? But, if you’re a caregiver for your mate or family member, summertime entertaining can be challenging. Many older adults may no longer have the health, mobility and stamina to join in the fun but certainly do not want to be left out of every event!

No worries! Just a little pre-planning can help make it easier for an older adult to take part in the festivities. If your loved one can’t attend a day of the picnicking, schedule a meal that might fit into their regular routine and during a time of day when the weather is not too hot or cold. Be sure they bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.

If your loved one isn’t up to these more robust activities, check these easy ideas for entertaining your care-receiver from Home Instead Senior Care!
Top 10 List of Fun Things to Do with a disabled senior:

  1. A day of painting or coloring. With the popularity of adult coloring books, both seniors and their grandchildren can now enjoy this pleasing pastime. If your family is particularly artistic, they might even want to try their hand at watercolors and paint selfies to share with the entire family.
  2. Breakfast outdoors. Florida is hot in the summer, but breakfast on the patio, deck or lanai may be a great alternative if an older adult no longer has the endurance to leave the family home. Pack up a picnic basket with egg salad sandwiches, fresh cut fruit and a thermos of coffee /tea. Put out a colorful checkered tablecloth and paper plates / cups and you’re set! Purchase fast food Egg McMuffins to make it really simple😊
  3. Go to the park. A trip to the park, is a good way to help seniors re-live their memories of taking their own children to the playground on warm, sunny mornings. Bring a study lawn chair or sit on the park bench and help them reminisce as they watch other children play.

Summer Book Discussions

In Anxious for Nothing, Max Lucado leads participants to reflect on the promises of Philippians 4:4-8.  This passage from Paul’s epistle contains an antidote to anxiety that will help you develop a mindset of resilience. You may pre-purchase a small paperback study book / journal @ $8.00 in our Church office or in the Narthex after services the last two weeks of May.
Join Pastor Mark Williams on Wednesday, June 12th at 10am in the Sunset Conference Room for a discussion on Kate Bowler's Everything Happens For a Reason: And Other Lies I’ve Loved. Frank and funny, dark and wise, Kate Bowler pulls the reader deeply into her life in an account she populates affectionately with a colorful, often hilarious retinue of friends, mega-church preachers, relatives, and doctors.  Everything Happens for a Reason tells her story, offering up her irreverent, hard-won observations on dying and the ways it has taught her to live.
