NEW YORK, NEW YORK—United Jewish Teachers today endorsed Caroline Shinkle for Congress in New York’s 12th District.
NY-12 has more Jewish residents than any other House district in the country. That should mean something. For three years it has not. Jewish students and teachers in New York City have been harassed in hallways, told that Israel is fair game in class, and watched City Hall treat antisemitism like a branding problem.
“Antisemitism in this city is not a side issue,” said Moshe Spern, president of United Jewish Teachers. “Jews have been jumped leaving shul. Synagogues have been surrounded. Jewish kids have been harassed in our schools. City Hall talks around it. Caroline Shinkle does not. She lived in Israel. She treats Jewish safety like public safety. That is why we are endorsing her.”
Shinkle is a Midtown attorney. She graduated from MIT and Harvard Law School and has worked at the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, the Bank for International Settlements, and the Bank of Israel in Jerusalem. Shinkle is the Republican nominee for the open seat that Jerry Nadler is vacating. Her Democratic opponent is one-term state assemblyman Micah Lasher. The general election is this November 3, with early voting beginning on October 24.
Lasher immediately endorsed Zohran Mamdani for mayor despite the fact that Mamdani will not condemn the phrase "globalize the intifada" and is the number 1 acolyte of Hasan Piker. Lasher continues to support Mamdani and radical DSA policies and is even working with disgraced media consultant Morris Katz—a top advisor to Mamdani and who was running Nazi-tattooed Graham Platner's Senate campaign in Maine.
Mamdani has spent years calling Israel’s war a genocide. When reporters asked Lasher if he agreed with that charge, Lasher would not reject it. He called it a “definitional debate.” In the district with the largest Jewish population in America, that is a dodge.
“You cannot endorse a mayor who repeats the genocide libel and then hide behind word games when Jewish families ask where you stand,” Spern said. “Caroline does not hide. That is the difference.”
Lasher has completely caved in to the radical DSA agenda, especially when it comes to support for Israel, stating that he is exhausted discussing the issue of Israel or, as he refers to it, "a plot of land the size of New Jersey."
In August, United Jewish Teachers released a report counting more than 250 antisemitic and anti-Israel incidents in New York City public schools since October 7, 2023. Harassment. Threats. Assaults. Swastikas. Biased lessons. United Jewish Teachers asked the city to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism, call the NYPD when hate graffiti appears, and publish the numbers. They are still waiting.
“Manhattan does not need another member of Congress who gets quiet when Jewish New Yorkers get targeted,” Spern said. “Caroline will not get quiet. We want Jewish teachers, parents, and voters in this district to know her name before they vote.”
NY-12 covers the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side, Midtown, Hell’s Kitchen, Chelsea, Union Square, and Stuyvesant Town.
