Can you believe March is almost over?! Us either. We're glad you're back for another installment of United News. Take a look below to see what United Way of Lancaster County has been up to in March and to share with you what is coming up in April.

Take Action for 211!

United Way of Pennsylvania supports increased investment of state funds, to an annual appropriation of $2 million, to continue our public-private partnership, strengthen PA 211, and ensure a consistent experience for every user. An increased investment will ensure that PA 211 can effectively serve Pennsylvanians, invest in Resource Navigators and Housing Specialists, and improve our technology for efficient service.

There's Still Time to File Your Taxes!

Only two more weeks to file your 2023 tax return. (Deadline is April 15th) VITA still has appointments available at our Columbia, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Paradise and VITA on King Street in Lancaster locations. Over 8,000 appointments were made this season – but we still have a spot for you!

Again, this year, tax services will be available year-round. We will continue to prepare 2023 returns – as well as past year returns. Amendments and rent/property tax rebates can also be prepared. To schedule an appointment, call 211 after April 15th. Appointments will be open beginning in May.

ALICE: The Experience

ALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, defines the struggles of households that earn above the Federal Poverty Level, but not enough to afford a bare-bones household budget. In Lancaster County, 35% of households are at or below the ALICE and the Federal Poverty Level thresholds. Some areas, such as Columbia Borough (65%), Lancaster City (54%) and Ephrata (51%) are home to an even higher number of households at or below these thresholds.

United Way of Pennsylvania’s “Alice: The Experience” gamifies ALICE so that neighbors can see first person what it’s like to be one of the 73,980 ALICE households in Lancaster County. We are committed to advocating for all ALICE families in fighting for economic mobility and financial empowerment.

The Individual Cohort is Complete!

This month concludes our Project Blueprint Individual Cohort, with the final session held on Thursday, March 28, 2024. During this final meeting, participants had the opportunity to apply the leadership and governance skills acquired throughout the program. We extend our sincere appreciation to Armstrong World Industries for graciously hosting our cohort for this important session of Project Blueprint, where participants had the opportunity to experience a boardroom setting.

As we bid farewell to this cohort, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our donors, Equity Committee members, volunteer facilitators, and United Way staff who were involved in making this program successful.
